My husband and I recently stayed at Song of the Sea for a long weekend in April and were very happy with our stay. Our room was very comfortable and we enjoyed having the lanai to enjoy early morning and late night. The beach was easily accessible from the property and not very crowded, although it was a race some mornings to get out there to "reserve" your chair before they were all snatched up.
We enjoyed staying at a smaller resort vs. a larger all-inclusive resort. We didn't mind that a restraunt wasn't on-site since there were so many great dining options to choose from on the island. If our stay would have been longer, we would have gone to the Sunday Sanibel Island Farmer's market to stock our fridge for quick beach lunches and snacks.
I would recommend this location if you're looking for a smaller hotel. We were a little concerned about noise having a pool-view room but there weren't many families with children so had a quiet stay.
Although Song does has quiet a few bikes to borrow, a car is pretty much essential if you're interested in exploring the Island and it's restaraunts.
