You would not think a trip to a museum is necessary given the plentitude of shells on the beach on Sanibel Island. But you would be wrong. This museum really does put those -- and just about every other shelled sea creature in the world -- into beautiful and engaging perspective. Allow at least an hour and enjoy every minute.

If you are going to walk down the beach on Sanibel, this needs to be your first stop to learn about all of the things you will see during your stay. We went there first, and the rest of the week we were able to understand what we were looking at, and looking for. The staff here was very compassionate about the local shells and wild life

The museum has done a nice job of displaying shells and other interesting facts. It's a good stop for older children - maybe above the age of 10.

I enjoyed seeing shells from all over the world as well as what is local. Quite a large building & very nice displays.

We started with the videos, which was very helpful in how to appreciate the extensive shell collection. Be sure to visit the basement with delightful shell dioramas created by the husband of one of the founders. Allow several hours, as there is much to see.
