We were looking for a place to eat lunch before getting on the auto-train and stumbled on Cafe Perks. We are diner-fanatics and this is the real mcCoy: a place where the waitresses joke around with regulars and newcomers alike, with a daily "blue plate special" and just plain good food. I ordered a grilled cheese and bacon ... except that here it is listed as "grilled bacon and cheese", which was really accurate. The sandwich was loaded with bacon. Of course, we aren't talking gourmet fare, but it was good as any grilled cheese I've had. Good french fries; great cole slaw and very reasonable prices. My husband had an excellent club sandwich and when he asked for extra mayo ... they brought a squeeze bottle ... not just a tiny dab in a cup. The posted list of daily blue plate specials looked great (typical home-made offerings like meat loaf, fish fry and chicken fried steak) and most were $7 or $8 with sides. Wish we could have stayed for dinner! Staff is happy, friendly and accommodating. By all means, if you're passing through, stop in.
