The Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club
Ranked #7 of 43 Hotels in St. Petersburg
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 7, 2012

Stayed at the Renaissance Vinoy over Memorial Day weekend and booked using airline miles. Overall, it's an excellent property and location and made for a very fun and relaxing weekend.

ROOMS: The rooms were pretty standard - a massive bed and clean and decently sized room with a desk and bathroom for two, though not much extra living space. We had a view of concrete, but it didn't bother us.

SERVICE: I have no complaints about housekeeping, though the mini bar is the kind that automatically charges you when you remove an item and we had mischarges because there were extra, non-mini bar items crammed in there that we tried to move around to close the fridge. However, they easily fixed it at the front desk upon check out.

LOCATION: The location cannot be beat. You're literally right on the marina, in downtown St. Petersburg near a multitude of restaurants, bars, shops, and cultural attractions, including about 15 minutes by foot to the Dali Museum. It's about a 20-25 minute drive (even on the holiday weekend) to beautiful St. Pete Beach, and it was nice to be able to come back to our hotel, away from the sand and sun, and walk to nightlife in the evening. (I believe you can also take the trolley to the beach, too, and there's a stop right outside the hotel.) Though the beach is amazing, I definitely preferred this location.

PROPERTY: The hotel has a few restaurants and bars, including a lovely porch bar out front and a coffee shop that serves Illy, and a large pool and fitness room. We didn't use many of these amenities, however, mainly because we went to the beach, but also, it was EXTREMELY crowded. I think I counted about 6 or 8 weddings, at least, over the course of the weekend. This didn't cause any problems for us, though the pool was packed and at times some of the restaurants were closed for private receptions. This could bother some people, but it didn't bother us.

Overall, it was a great stay and I'm eager to go back!

Spent only one night here, but I have to say it was very relaxing and very tranquil. The hotel itself is quite nice and the staff was very gracious.
It's perfectly situated near the Fine Art Museum, The Dali Museum, of those so inclined and lost of great little places to eat, as well.
Very walkable area and very quiet and tranquil.
Do yourself a favour, walk along the bay and head towards the pier, off to the left you'll find this little patch of white sand called Spa Beach -- what a great place to sit and watch the waves lap the shoreline.

Especially considering the price, Vinoy has a lot to offer. The lobby has beautifully curated spaces for hanging out, chatting, and grabbing a cocktail in a relaxed west-coast Florida atmosphere. Ishmael, who took care of our luggage, was a delight. Notably, Al, the manager of the valet stand, actually offered to drive us to our destination in our car when we had trouble getting a taxi in time to reach our event.

However, we had a really touch-and-go experience with housekeeping and room service. Upon arrival one of the staff members acted like it was an emergency that she replenish a water bottle from our mini bar that the previous guest had enjoyed. We were getting changed for dinner when she arrived and rather than just agreeing to come back later she asked me if I would put the bottle into the bar myself. Granted, this is not an epic blunder, but I've definitely never been asked to perform even the most minute housekeeping duty myself at a hotel.

The next morning we ordered breakfast for two to be shared between two queen beds. Rather than bring us a table, the staff delivered a tray with stacks of plates and glassware and put it on the desk across the room. I'm not sure if we were both supposed to share the office chair for breakfast or hold our eggs in our laps, but we ended up calling back downstairs to request a table so we could eat. Again, not the end of the world, but it was definitely inconvenient and generally weird.

Room Tip: High floors on the bay offer a lovely view of the park, marina, and sunrise. Definitely worth the no...

We have stayed here 20 times in past three years... the staff even know our names now... This is fine Marriott-run hotel in a fun, funky West Coast FLA city... get a balcony room, either overlooking St. Pete and the pool, or the tennis courts/ The latter for a more quite stay.
The one thing that sets the Vinoy apart from other Marriott properties is the food... it is dreadful at all levels... through breakfast lunch and dinner... Marchand's is a waste of good restaurant space... Fred's (the mostly not open) steakhouse is an unforgettable experience in the worst way.

Room Tip: Tennis side balcony is quiet... city side balcony has a great view.

Stayed for 1 night in May and used points. Very nice property with a friendly staff! Was in town for 1 day and went to a baseball game. the hotel offered a round trip shuttle service for $5 per person which ended up being a great deal. Easy pick up and drop off.

Rooms were clean and spacious and parking was reasonable. Would recommend and stay here again.

We came to the Vinoy after four days in Sarasota at the Ritz (see review) which had been quite a disappintment. The Vinoy was like day to their night. From the moment we drove up to the door we could tell we were at a first-rate hotel. Despite the fact that they were extremely busy - Memorial Day weekend AND at least 9 weddings that we saw (!!) - we never felt overlooked or that we were in any way not important to every member ofthe staff we came into contact with. To me, this was remarkable, and I congratulate the management on such a well-run hotel.
Our room, upgraded to a suite, was wonderful. In contrast to the Ritz, it was very clean and well taken care of.
Every meal we had in the hotel was delicious. Dinner in Marchand's was well worth the money - and was a lot more affordable than the Ritz.
We liked the location - lots of good walks around the neighborhoods and along the Wharf.
THIS IS WHAT A 5 STAR HOTEL SHOULD BE!

Room Tip: We had a suite that faced over the gardens, so it was quiet (andwe had a nice view of some ofthe wed...

If you are in vacation and looking for a hotel with a relaxing and fun atmosphere, this isn't it. No pool bar, no waitress, no music, no people... This place is boring and it's a holiday week!
