We went there in the am for a walk on the boardwalk. It was breezy even though sunny. It's a fun, easy walk. Enjoy the fresh air.

You don't have to go outside the city limits of St. Petersburg to find one of our areas most beautiful natural sites. Weedon Island Preserve offers a visitor's center, nature trails and boardwalks, fishing, kayaking, canoeing on Tampa Bay and the enjoyment of seeing nature at her best! Bring your own water vehicle or rent one. There is a nice launch area with cleaning station and restrooms. The fishing pier is right here too. An awesome place to relax and explore Mother Nature!

This is real St. Pete... Before the people took it over. Its almost all mangroves and marsh land... They have boardwalks cut through the mangroves and it offers and amazingly scenic stroll through nature. You can spot many birds, spiders, bugs, and wild animals... Along with many native plants and flowers. They have 2 or 3 overlook towers that offer some of the best views in the city. It really is beautiful. I would say to walk the whole thing, it takes between 1 and 2 hours. Oh, I forgot to mention, you can rent kayaks or canoes to explore, which really is an amazing time. This takes all day. If you are in the area, I HIGHLY recommend a visit. Bring lots of water, it gets very hot.

Free preserve with elevated boardwalks to go out into the natural area with viewing platforms over the water. We walked on the elevated boardwalk loop and saw lots of birds and fish and even saw two rays in their natural setting. I should also mention we saw several large arthropods, which unfortunately were not close enough to the boardwalk to get a good picture of but they were on the large side. I also saw several earthen mounds which I later learned could be from native Indians that frequented the area. If you are going in the heat of the day make sure to take water with you, we didn’t and I regretted it.

Don't miss the visitor center which is not open all the time now due to government cuts but it is worth the visit if it is open. They have a third floor viewing platform which gives a really good view of how things used to look in Florida prior to the arrival of the Mouse and strip malls.
