We rented a boat at I.C. Sharks for the day and then went fishing around this island preserve. The best way to explore it in depth is either in a kayak or a canoe. The trail is easy to maneuver and it's just a great place to go for nature. We saw several manatees as well as dolphins around the island. Caught lots of fish (we just catch and release) and overall had a great time.

Bring your own or rent a kayak to meander through the mangrove trails. You can also walk the boardwalks through the mangroves. This is somewhat primitive, but an excellent place to see wildlife. Look for crabs climbing the mangrove roots, spiders in their webs, birds among the trees and along the shore.

We have not walked all the trails yet but we have walked about half and they are very nice. Several look out platforms over the bayou or a little lake. The trails are well maintained and offer some beautiful photo ops and some nice, quiet solitude.

There is an education center but it was not open when we were there, there are also kayaks for rent.

If you like a nice walk in the woods, be sure to take a stroll at Weedon Island.

Went on a morning kayak trip through the Weedon Island Canoe trail. Wonderfully maintained. The trail is enjoyable for all skill levels. The mangroves provide shelter from the wind, making it ideal for novices. Trail goes through mangrove "tunnels" and between islands, making it a great way to experience the estuary system of Tampa Bay. Depending on tide, numerous shallow areas to get out and walk in the water. Nice launch facilities. There is also a boardwalk through the mangroves.

We have had in the past, before the cost cutting measures took it away, amazing opportunity to go on FREE guided canoe trips throught the mangroves here..now the course is still marked and one can still do this tour on your own..it is well worth it! Now we just like to take our visitors there to see the wild Florida that once was..there is a wonderful visitor center which is well worth one's time.
