I was quite surprised by this. Although small, the grounds are well kept, plants in great health and overall a very nice place to visit.

I was in the area for my brothers wedding and, being a native born and life long resident of Florida, I've always heard of the Sunken Gardens. You might ask, what makes it a "Sunken" gardens? Well, quite simply, it's a botanical garden that's in a natural depression, sinkhole, or dry lake. The gardens are almost 100 years old and are filled with many native and non native plant species, some of which were planted by the founder Mr Turner. There is also a small collection of animals here as well, mainly different species of turtles and parrots. There is a small admission fee and they are open daily but are not open at night so check with the parks website for hours and admission before you go. There is a children's museum on site as well which is an additional cost as well. There are free guided tours which last approximately an hour or so depending on the size of the tour group. I would definitely recommend coming here if you're on the Tampa, St Petersburg, Clearwater, or Bradenton area. You can easily spend an hour or two here to walk the park.

We had a cloudy day, not good for going to the beach, and decided to visit the gardens. Good choice! A lovely stroll through a tropical paradise. My favorites includes the hanging white trumpet flowers ( not sure what they were), the flamingoes and parrots, and the variety of palms. Being seniors and having $1 off coupon besides it was only $5 for each of us. The gift shop had lovely choices also.

In my opinion, the captive wildlife (birds, turtles, fish) really undermined the beauty and positive aspects of this unique location. The plants and scenery are terrific on their own, Sunken Gardens doesn't need anything else to make it a place to visit. But they have birds in small cages, and unlike nearby Lowry Park Zoo, there doesn't seem to be any emphasis on species conservation and healing wounded animals.

These birds should be free to fly and live in their native habitat, not stuck in small cages for the amusement of some tourists. The birds looked miserable to me, and their cages made the otherwise nice atmosphere depressing. I hope the City of St. Petersburg and Sunken Gardens decides to change this as soon as possible.

nondescript entrance to a delite! If you are in the mood for a garden/botanical fix, check this place when in St. Petes. Lovely stroll, with many resturants close by for a bite. Also a nice gift shop and picture gallery showcasing some history of the garden. I enjoyed the easy walk, took about 30-40 minutes of leisurely strolling. Steel drummer performing in the amphitheater. A nice respite!
