“good beach stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2008

My dad has a time share here and this year he invited us to join him. My husband couldn't get off work so it was just me and two kids, ages 10 and 15. Dad doesn't always tell me all the facts, so when I drove up to the abandoned pink hotel I started to panic. But the resort was great for our family. It was steps to the beach which was one of the best in Floriday (Navarre Beach near Pensacola is the best). We had everything we neede to cook meals in the room for breakfast and lunch and plenty of places to choose from for eating out at dinner. The housekeeping service was great. Since we were staying 6 days we expected only basic service, but received full service cleaning every day. The furnishings are not modern, but serviceable. The pool is awesome. It just went on and on. The landscaping is pleasant, although around the old hotel it could be maintained a bit more meticuloulsy. It rained a lot in the evenings while we were there, typical for this area during this part of the year, but the parking lot was flooded much of the time. The locals seem to think that because the hotel is empty the parking lot is free for them to use during the day. If we left and returned in the afternoon, we wouldn't get a parking spot close to the condo. When it started to cloud up and lightning, you would see the people run from the beach to their cars and leave with towels and beach gear in hand. My dad said the condo association was trying to figure out how to restrict access to the parking lot for hotel guests only.

We just stayed here a few days as the guest of friends.

True, your first impression may cause concern as you enter the property(driving) through a closed portion of the hotel property.

Once you proceed to the open portion you find the rest of the property and rooms well kept, clean and attractive. The pool is huge and several clean hot tubs are available.

Free washer/dryer are a nice convenience

Our 2 bedroom suite with kithcen was a good value considering similar accommodations at adjacent properties might cost much more.

It's a quiet, peaceful property. You can really relax and has ample beachfront on the gulf. Chair poolside are free. Cabanas offered at the beach are the usual $6/Hour or $18/Day if you must limit sun exposure. It is a good value. It's more than a 3 Star, but not a 4 Star. 3.5 Star would be best description.

Some great restaurant options close by:

Snappers - right across the street. Excellent seafood and non-seafood dishes with excellent presentation at moderate prices.

The Reef - Just down Guilf Blvd a short walk. It's more casual but food is great and pricing is very affordable. Lunch and Dinner menu had lots of options, light or full dinner. The boast "the best burger on the beach" and they are absolutely correct, can't beat, best I've had in years.

Groceries: A Publix Market is a short distance (best driven) from the hotel. Get their Apple Fritters!

We took a leap of faith and bought a 7day/8 night stay at Coral Reef off of Ebay. We were pleseantly surprised upon our arrival to find that we had one of the 12 beachfront suites available at the resort. The suite itself was clean and roomy enough for two people, and everything needed for our stay was provided. The view was spectacular. I suppose if you were not in a beach front room, your impressions would be different, but we had no complaints. Yeah, the furnishings are beginning to look a bit dated along with the mirrored walls, but I went there for a week of fun in the sun, not to critique condo furniture. The staff was friendly and helpful, the pool area was clean, and parking was not a problem. Obviously, if the abandoned motel and beach bar were no longer on the property it would enhance things, but neither bothered me in the least during my visit. The hotel I used to stay at on St Pete Beach wanted more money for a two night stay than I paid to stay here for a week, and their rooms are considerably smaller and less well equipped. If you want a five star experience, go pay five star prices down the street. I'll stay at Coral Reef and keep my vacation affordable without sacrificing enjoyment.

After reading the reviews, we were a little apprehensive. Our week stay was great. The room was a nice size, even had a free tidy up of the room midweek, the washer and dryer were free, the people all around the resort were very nice, the front office, the maintenance workers, the housekeepers. Soundproofing between rooms was also good. The pink hotel out front had no bearing on our stay----don't know why people even complain about that, it's irrelevant. Very good experience!!!!!

  • Liked — Everything was furnished except your food and clothes!!!!
  • Disliked — I have no negative comment about this resort!

We have been vacationing in the St. Petersburg area for several years and this is the worst place we have ever stayed! Although there are a couple of units directly on the beach, the view from our unit was the back of another hotel. The rooms are cramped - we had to straddle the toilet to shut the bathroom door. The furniture is from the 60's and so worn that it is uncomfortable to use. The hot tubs were broken and the "heated" pool was too cold for teenagers to use. On a positive note there was good water pressure in the shower and we were given clean towels and sheets.

We enjoyed the room it was a nice size for two adults and a twelve year old child. We enjoyed siiting out on balcony and being able to watch our son down at the pool. Our son loved the pool area and we enjoyed it also. The maid we had was very friendly the only thing I didn't like was when we would get off the elevator the maids were sitting there smoking. The smoke would be everywhere. Furniture was older but pretty good shape. I quess they are going to be updating the furniture sometime. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The ocean /beach was great. The front of old pink hotel is not a pretty site but the resort itself for the price was nice. We would stay again....

  • Liked — Full kitchen, private bedroom, pool area
  • Disliked — shared parking with abandon motel ,parking lot was not in best repair.

We spent a week here at Coral Reef Resort and had a great time. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. The Staff was very willing to assist us and all our needs. The Pools and Spas were in working order and was at a comfortable temp.
Don't let the old vacated hotel in the front of the property fool you. The Coral Reef is located right beside the best Beach bars in St. Pete. We would have no problem staying here again!!!!
