We just returned from 4 nights at the Island Grand. The 2 bdrm/2 bath room was a very comfortable size for our family (wife, 1 yr old son, mother in law and me). My only complaint with the room was the mattresses were well used and needed to be replaced. The resort was clean. The pools and beach were very relaxing. They had water toys at the wading pool for the little kids to play with. The dining was not very good. Bermuda was expensive with poor service. The food was average at best. The Flying Bridge was good for lunch but again expensive. Drinks were outrages everywhere except B.R. Cudas which was great for an evening of beers and sports. We felt a little nickled and dimed with everything having a fee. We had the EVP at $20 per night which covered these fees but still. They much more focused on meetings/conference attendees and not individual vacationers. Crabby Bills a couple blocks south was a causal atmosphere with good quality food at reasonable prices. Skip the Pier in St Petersburg, nothing to see, dirty. Ft Desoto was interesting. The fishing piers were cool and we saw dolphins playing off them. Busch Gardens was great and a couple hours at the Lowry Zoo was fun too.

I had read all of these reviews before going to Tradewinds 4/30-5/3/06. I think the impression you get of the hotel depends on how crowded it is. We loved it but we traveled a Sun-Wed in May when it wasn't crowded and the weather was nice. The pools were great, especially the completely covered outdoor pool, there were never more than 8 people in any pool and the hottubs frequently sat empty. Never a wait for an elevator or beach chair, etc. I think if we had gone over spring break as other reveiwers had, I would have felt differently about our stay. So keeping that in mind....our room, a one bdrm suite, gulf view, was lovely. Nice kitchenette. (Thanks to those who mentioned the liquor store and grocery store.) We rented a car since it was cheaper than the shuttle and were glad we did, we daytripped to the Lowry Zoo which was great also. And went to a good Italian place for dinner (tired of hotel food). The grounds of the hotel are lush and well maintained, very courteous staff, someone always around. The kids club didn't run on the slow days (Sun-Tues) and I was disappointed about that. But when we did get to use it, the kids (4 & 7) enjoyed it immensely. The kids also enjoyed that the hotel provides OOOOOdles of pool floats and beach toys. The beach was clean, lots of tiny shells, almost hurt your feet. The hammocks were a nice touch too. As far as the crowd goes, mostly young families, all income ranges from what I could observe. No problems. We had a perfect vacation and look forward to going again.

My husband and I were looking for a place on the beech where we could just relax and get away from the every day rush. Our flight arrived 2 days prior to the start of our stay so we had booked in ahead of time with a hotel about 20 miles from St. Pete. We checked in and went looking for the Tradewinds. We thought it would be great if they had room to put us up for the extra 2 nights. The staff was more than accomodating. Not only did they put us up for the 2 extra nights but arrainged it so we would not have to switch. The resort was everything we were looking for. They numorous cabana's on the beach and several pools to accomodate familities or adults only. There were ample table and chairs located around the pools and patio and several places where you could purchase refreshments. They had volly ball set up on the beach and a huge slide for kids and young at heart or you could go for a paddle boat ride. The rooms were clean and fresh and the staff friendly and polite. We did a few short day trips and spent the rest of the time relaxing or walking on the beach. We would have liked a unit with a kitchen and washer/dryer but the staff took care of our room and left us clean linen. This was great. I have certain things that I look for when we travel and even though we did not have all of what we were looking for the staff and the serenity we found made up for it. The view of the ocean and the sound of the waves lapping on the beach made for a very peaceful stay. It was difficult to leave the warm, sunny beach and return to the real world. Thank you making our stay everything we were looking for. By the way, do you have any "little" swans yet?

Stayed for one glorious week and wish it could have been longer. Every single staff member was friendly, professional, and went out of their way to accommodate our every need. The room was very clean and well appointed with a balcony overlooking the ocean. Our building had a very nice adults only pool. Very much appreciated by those of us who did not wish to listen to crying screaming children. The only drawback was the price of drinks at the pool bar. $8.30 for a 6 ounce pina colada. Yikes! This resort , however, had a number of choices regarding eateries from bars, to a pizza parlor, an ice cream shop, and upscale sit down restaurants. One could eat somewhere different every day and would not even have to leave this resort for an entire week! Many fun amenities for both adults and kids from water trikes, to a giant water slide, to parasailing, to paddle boats, etc. I cannot say enough good things about this resort. Would definitely stay here again!

We stayed at the Tradewinds Island Grand during Spring Break in the first week of April. Upon arrival, our bags were delivered to our room, staff was friendly, everything was very nice. The colors and foliage surrounding the buildings are very beautiful. However, the WHOLE area is completely developed and very commercial. It is definitely more of a "rich" atmosphere that was packed with little kids and British businessmen.

We stayed in the Breckenridge building. Our room was very clean, no bugs, everything worked and we never had any problems with the elevators being crowded. Our room had a view of the roof and air conditioning units. It was very convenient to have a kitchen unit as you could eat breakfast in the room instead of dining out. There is also the Pizza Hut to Go and an ice cream shop located on the main floor of Breckenridge. There is a Publix grocery store several miles down the road where you can purchase snacks for a more reasonable price.

The beach was very nice except for the sewage pipe that I spied coming out of some bushes/plants next to one of the volleyball nets. The smell was awful and the sandy area surrounding the volleyball net had been partially soaked by sewage. However, if you overlook that, the rest of the beach was very clean, full of shells, and the sunsets are gorgeous. During the day the beach really fills up, you may find yourself dodging little kids and their beach toys more than anything else. At night, everyone claps when the sunset is over. One cabana per room is available if you pay an extra fee for your room, or you can rent one for $20 per day. During the day and evening there was almost always a police vehicle or four wheeler on the beach, always felt safe.

As far as activities, dolphin watches and boat tours are available but very expensive. Compared to previous vacations, I missed having some element of nature around me, because the area is so developed and built up. (the hotel is off of a four lane busy road) There are some good shops down the road, if you are brave enough to cross it. The parking lots are very narrow, and good luck finding a parking space is you return late. As mentioned in previous reviews, there are several pools that are small but were always clean when we did use them. There are also two hot tubs that are even smaller and were always full whenever we walked by.

Overall, I would say I was not impressed with the quality of the experience for the money. I definitely had higher expectations as this is advertised as a four star hotel. In the future, I would prefer to spend my vacation hiking/swimming/boating in a more natural setting. However, if you love crowds of people, development, and spending lots of money this is the place for you!
