“some good some bad”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

We started out by booking an executive king directly from the website. When we arrived (lots of steps to the entrance if you self park) we were told that our room was at their sister property 1/2 mile up the road. That's fine if you like quiet, a small pool that is not great, and no food - just drinks. Better for families with kids since each room is really a condo with a kitchen. Not so great if you want to eat lunch by the pool or beach. Apparently the rooms there are bigger but we don't spend that much time in the room. We got the "last" king room at the original property (at a higher price) and yes, had to schlep everything back. So far not a great start. Then to be comfortable on the beach you have to rent lounges and umbrellas - $25 for the chairs, $40 to include an umbrella. Sorry, that's just not a good value in our minds. Especially since we were meeting friends for dinner and only had 3 hours to spend at the beach - check in isn't until 4 - they let us in at 3. It is a pretty property, the pools are very nice, and our room overlooking the bay side (not a great view) was fine. So stop at Walgreens and get some cheap chairs - or lie on a towel. Sinxe we travelled in February the umbrella wasn't really needed but when it gets hot you would need the shade.

Room Tip: Gulf view, but you'll pay

Dear lele0820,

Thank you for your review!

As it is our goal to ensure our guests are comfortable during their stays I am delighted to hear that the front office was able to assist you in finding a great room during your recent visit to St. Pete Beach! We do have a wonderful company, Boucher Bros, that rents state-of-the-art beach equipment to our guests and delivers a first class level of service along with it. However, we are also pleased to continue offering our guests complimentary seating by our two pools here on property, and I was glad to hear you had the opportunity to enjoy both areas during your trip!

Thank you again for taking the time to post your experience, I hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future!

This was my second stay at the Don and it won't be my last! We were here February 6, 2013 through February 11, 2013 for my daughters wedding (not held at the Don). The hotel was busy with some convention or another but never seemed too harried. As usual great service throughout the hotel especially in the pool area and at check in.

While the rooms are not large and our bathroom was tiny the furnishing were appointed quite nicely. The property is not inexpensive but well worth the cost.

Love this hotel. Beautiful historic architecture. Right on the beach. Classy, great service, good food, although I would've loved a beach view balcony!

I would pick a different hotel if I stayed with kids.

I evened ordered popcorn one evening while watching a movie. Not on the menu. But it was delivered to the room in minutes.

I have stayed at the Don Cesar several times and will return!

Visited this hotel with my family a few weeks ago to attend a funeral in the area. The service was friendly, prompt, and fairly priced. The hotel itself is in wonderful shape and the spa was luxurious. On the beach and with two pools, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Room Tip: Ask for a room over the beach!

Very disappointing! We went here for a birthday celebration. The service was OK, but the food was terrible and very expensive! I had the chicken salad that was advertised with asparagus and it was served with green beans. Hubby and sister-in-law #1 ordered steak sandwiches. The "steak" is a cut of brisket marinated for a few minutes in soy sauce and then over-grilled to the point of becoming beef jerky. Very tough as well! Sister-in-law#2 ordered pizza. It tasted like a Cisco pizza crust and served with a Cisco or Cheney sauce with some cheap cheese thrown in. We had no wine or beer or alcohol, just iced teas. The Bill came to $108!!!!!! We left a 20% tip, Jason was an OK server but lunch for 4 came to $130. The atmosphere was nice but not worth that much. This is a tourist rip off joint. We are locals. We won't be back.

We visited this hotel 10 years ago on a visit from the UK and felt it was rather dated and needed investment.

We decided to give it another try this month during our holiday in Florida and we were delighted. What a change. The Hotel has been transformed and modernised throughout. The most noticeable change was staff attitude. Perhaps it is the influence of the new owners but the staff were friendly and very professional. The pool area is excellent and right on one of the great beaches.

We will return.
