“Beautiful beach hotel”

After reading some of the reviews for the DBR, I was a little leery to stay here, BUT to open my door to the beach every morning for 9 days WAS heaven!!!!!! Yes, you need to purchase the gulf view rooms, the sand is white as the snow I left at home and could easily over look the only issue that was a concern, intermittent WIFI! But we struggled through and enjoyed it. Great beds, great cleaning staff and would go back again - just not through spring break.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the main floor, ours was 176, superb.

The room was great, the customer service was awful. They seemed a bit stressed and over worked, they acted like it was a nuisance to help me. They were also pretty rude regardless of how nice I was being. Other than that we loved the place. We laid out on the deck that over looked the beach and it simply couldn’t get any better. The pool was nice and the bar is a nice place to grab a drink and some lunch. We would definitely return.

We were only able to stay one night here as it was a half way point to meet up with friends. But it was absolutely what I was looking for, an evening/day on the beautiful beach. We arrived a bit early and were welcomed to an early check in. If you are able, purchase a beach front or even a pool view room. Our view was the parking lot with no balcony. If we were there longer than one night I would have requested a room with a balcony and view. The photos on the website are spot on...I'm always a little weary that maybe they are taken from different angles or photo shopped but the pool area and beach views are really what they show. The beach is just gorgeous and huge so we were not crowded at all and it was the very beginnings of spring break. The rooms are nice, nothing special but nothing horrible. Again we were only there for one night so I can't really comment on how suitable it would be for a long weekend or even week long trip but it worked great for us. We had some drinks at the beach front bar which was nice to be right on property and not far from the room. We dined at the local bar across the street the Rusty Clam (I believe) wings, beers, burgers...and then walked to the Undertow beach bar down the street AND we walked the beach back to the hotel. Point is...walking distance. We only ate in the hotel restaurant for breakfast on a Sunday morning. We ordered the buffet and the food was not the best...so I'd suggest checking out the menu instead. All in all service was great and the location was worth it all!! I would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: ask for a room with the view.

This is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. Moldy, tacky and poorly run. The bathroom above us leaked water down our walls. The security guard closed down the pool at 10pm, which I understand if they rooms had central air. But each room has a wall unit that is so loud we had to turn our television volume loud when the air unit clicked on and then quickly quiet it when the unit clicked off.

There are beach hotels where you don't pay much so you don't expect much. But the Dolphin's pricing is for a more upscale room. We will never stay here again.

Room Tip: Find another hotel.

The last time I stayed in a hotel in the St. Petersburg area was in 1961. I don't know specifically that the Dolphin was here then. But it might as well have been. This is a very dated hotel with minimal updates. It is not a bad place. But there is simply nothing to recommend it. There are so many choices in this area, I think you can do better at a very similar cost.

Booked the boulevard room for 3 nt, we were expecting to have the door open to the outside, the rooms are all inside. Large room, it did have a slight odor, nothing major, its an older hotel, and our room was clean, plenty of towels. flat screen tv. The housekeeping staff was great, didnt bother us when our DND sing was on door, always gave us plenty of towels.
Pool was very nice, towels at front desk. Ate one meal at Flipperz, the beach bar...had fish tacos, excellent!
CVS, Publix, other shops across the street. Crabby Bills a few doors down.
Enjoyed this hotel, will return in future.

Room Tip: All rooms have inside entrances, we had the cheapest room type, it was fine.

After reading previous reviews, we were a bit nervous about staying at the Dolphin, particularly with their relatively high rates. It was" spot on" with the reviews. As my husband and I were meeting at the hotel, we each had a car. Whoops! Only one car was granted parking privileges per room (which we did not know ahead of time), and the other had to park across the street. It worked out okay, but some people may object to this. The room was OKAY, but WAS a bit musty as older hotels tend to be. The lady at the front desk was not terribly cordial; didn't appear to like people, but the staff in the onsite restaurant were lovely and helpful. The couple we were with referred to the hotel as a kind of time warp to the old Howard Johnson hotel style of the 70's. It was close to other attractions and dining in the area, so that was one point in the hotel's favor, and the hotel room that we were in was clean and tidy. This hotel was the best we could do on short notice, but with more time to make reservations, I doubt that we would return to the same place.
