“What we hoped for!”
Reviewed March 22, 2011

This place was perfect for our family on a tight budget!
The beach, pool, and grass area were ideal for our family with 3 younger boys.
Nothing was elegant, but it was safe, clean, and had a friendly, helpful staff.
We cooked in all meals.
Our kitchen was not the best for cooking every meal.
We needed a noodle strainer, cookie sheet, and larger refrigerator.
However, as we cooked, the boys could play outside in the grass just feet from our doorway! They simply LOVED this!
The beds and bathrooms were small but it had a large closet to keep everything out of the way.
I would stay here again!

Our stay at the Beachcomber was wonderful. We planned a quick "get away" and this resort was great. The staff was great. Location could not have been better. The beach area was beautiful. Pools and garden area were kept neat and clean. The only tight spot was the parking. We always had a spot though.

The good--right on the gorgeous beach, beautifully kept grounds, staff friendly and helpful, good location, "old Florida" feel, clean rooms (carpet seemed to be clean too), tv adequate, wifi free, kitchenette and fridge nice to have.
The bad--you have to go through a bar reach the deck-walk to the beach (or go way around it), bar is packed with drinkers, smokers and a very loud band (but we could not hear it in the room), beds small, decor outdated, room felt damp (but it was not musty), wifi slow, decor outdated, kitchenettes have no utensils, plates, etc., and last but not least way over-priced for what you are going to get. So, stay here if you need a place on the beach with the "old Florida" feel (the rooms are adequate) but only if you don't mind the bar atmosphere in some areas of the property.

We have been staying at Beachcombers for 4 years. we are know going at least 3 times a year. Have made good friends with people that work there and have also met some amazing people while we have hung out at Jimmy B'S and Players. Would highly recommemd this place to stay. The staff are so friendly. have recommended this hotel to several people, they have all stayed here and had a great time too.

Fun entertainment, nice pools, nice beach... that's about it. The rooms were mediocre at best. Found someone elses socks on our floor, showers have fluctuating temperature, was harrassed twice by drunken idiots. The area doesn't offer a lot up the roads but on a positive, the staff was very friendly.

We haved stayed at the hotel several times. We enjoy the atmosphere at Jimmy B's. It's a short walk to the ocean and there is always entertainment. A perfect place to sit and watch the sunset!!

My husband and I stayed here from February 26 to March 6. We were dissatisfied with the first room we were given - it backed onto a dumpster and the stench wafted into our room and the parking area for the maid's cleaning carts was right outside our door so it wasn't very pleasant to sit outside in the small sitting area. We expressed our dissatisfaction and were told to report to the front desk the next day at 7am to see if they could change the room. We were not happy with this response so we complained via the provider through which we had made our bookings. We weren't that impressed with the resort anyway so we would have been happy to cancel and find another place to stay. They at first told us we could cancel with 48 hrs notice - which we interpreted to mean we could stay 2 nights and then leave without penalty (since it was peak season this could give them enough time to rebook, we reasoned). But it turns out they meant that we would vacate immediately but pay for 2 nights without even staying there. Since we didn't agree that we should have to pay for nothing while allowing the hotel to make double profit on a sub-far room, we chose to stay. The provider negotiated with the hotel directly to have them switch our rooms after the first night. After that, the switch went smoothly - we just had to pack up and the hotel took care of moving us to a better room on the 2nd morning. If the hotel had been more reasonable/cooperative in agreeing to switch us when we spoke to them directly so much hassle for both sides could have been avoided.

The next room was better located and had room to sit outside. It was still nothing fancy and I don't think that it is quite accurate to describe what is provided as a "fully equipped kitchen" (this is the class of room we'd book) - it had no glass/stemware (just disposable plastic cups and tiny plastic coffee cups), corkscrew or salt and pepper shakers. The bathroom is small. The rooms, especially the kitchen, feel dated. Overall, I would describe the room as more what you would expect from a motel than a hotel. That's fine if you're getting good value but for what we were paying for some nights, I did not feel that was the case.

The fitness room is three machines which seemed pretty old.

The good points are the grounds are generally well-maintained and attractive, the location directly on a nice stretch of St. Pete Beach and near restaurants, and the pools (heated to a nice comfortable temperature). Parking, Internet, and local calls were free as advertised. Note they charge $2/day if you want to use the in-room safe.

Overall, our stay was acceptable after switching rooms but I would not stay again because I don't think you should have to wrangle for a decent room when you're staying so long and paying so much (they acknowledged that the 1st room they gave us what their worst ).
