I read the reviews andwas so excite to take my two daughters, 4 & 7, to shell key. we arrive at 9 am, and head out on the 10 am shuttle. $83 later, as we are pulling up to shell keys they tell us there could be storms later, the waves are rough, and there is no visibility. which means no snorkeling, waves are too rough for kids to get in ocean. the shells are not abundant.and around the same size as what we find on the beach behind our hotel. ticked that they didn't tell us upfront about the waves and visibility because we would have come back another day with better.conditions. so here I a sitting on the windy, wavy beach while my kids play in the sand.expensive trip to play in sand.

Very sorry to hear you were so disappointed with your experience on Shell Key. There are days when the winds and currents are not the best for snorkeling. If you had told us that was your main reason for going I'm sure we would have suggested that you go another day. It is unfortunate that you did not give us an opportunity to address your concerns in person. We would have taken you back to the dock and refunded your money if you had let us know that snorkeling was the focus of your trip. Even if you had told us you were disappointed at the end of the trip we would have worked something out with you.

We took the shell key shuttle at 10:00AM, it was sold out and I thought it was nice they made a second trip for additinal passengers instead of making them wait for the next scheduled departure at 12:00. I felt safe in the boat and the captain and his partner documented everyone on the boat so they could keep track if everyone returned later. They seemed very focused on safety and made us aware of thunderstorms expected later in the afternoon asking that we plan to return on the 12:15 or 2:15 return shuttle. They also explained if any storms started heading in sooner they owuld come get us, its only about a 5-10 boat ride each way. When we were dropped on the island they provided beach umbrellas and masks and snorkels to those who wanted them. They had adult and kid sizes. We took advantage of this and went snorkeling! The water was clear and we found sand dollars and lots of great shells both on the beach and while snorkeling. Some parts of the island had more shells than others. It was not overcrowded and it was beautiful. On the way back they explained how to bleach and preserve our sanddollars. Somone spotted a dolphin so the captain turned off the engine of the boat and hung out in the water for about 20 minutes letting us enjoy seeing between 3-5 dolphin swimming around the boat It was a great experience and something we will remember forever. I can't wait to go back next year! I would highly recommend this. Eat at Seahorse Tavern for breakfast or lunch, its right across from where this shuttle departs and its great food! You can buy some last minute supplies like snacks water at the little shop on the pier this departs from. Also, they provide you a parking pass for all day so you can park in the metered parking spots along the street just go pay for the trip and then they will give you the pass to put on your dashboard. We paid the meter for 15 minutes and then put the pass on for the rest of the day.

We used to sail to Shell Key in a very small boat with our dog. Now we take the Shuttle, but not ofen enough. Shell Key is a tiny spit of sand that manages to accommodate very disparate groups of people -- from Northern tourists to laid-back locals and lots of folks in between.

My friends and I went on the Shell Key Shuttle today and it was well worth the money! We found a lot of beautiful shells and sand dollars! To top it all off we got to see several manatees, four manta rays, and several dolphins. The farther you walk the better the shells and sand dollars get so be prepared to walk a while to get the best. Some of the best shells and sand dollars were found by my group while snorkeling not walking on the shore, but you can find them on the shore as well. They will provide mask, snorkels, and umbrellas which was convenient. There were storms moving in while we were out there and when they made the return trip at 2pm they made sure to find everyone to get them back safely. I highly recommend Shell Key Shuttle.
