Yes, it is across the street from the beach....but that's as good as it gets. It is an old hotel with all the problems that come with that, such as small bathrooms and no elevator, but the management is the biggest problem. I wonder if they have ever stayed in another hotel to compare their property to. This "hotel" does not provide coffee anywhere, if you want ice, you have to take your ice bucket to the restaurant next door and they do not provide any toiletries. If you need a hair dryer or iron you have to ask for it. You can see through the oversize face towels that they provide as bath towels. The bedding is skimpy and there is only one bedside table and the only table lamp is on the dresser so if you want to read at night, tough! I think the lamp is located where it is because of the lack of outlets. I am traveling with a group, and one of them doesn't have a security lock on her door! The pool is heated they say, but after watching the local birds use it as a birdbath, I'm not sure I will go in there. This is more of a campground than a hotel. PASS IT UP!

My boyfriend (now fiance) and I drove down from Illinois to see friends during spring break 2007. We were in the St. Pete area for a few days before going down to Siesta Key. We happened to stop at the Hurricane to grab lunch and have drinks on the top deck. It was wonderful just to sit up there and be close to the ocean! We decided to walk next door (the Keystone) and see if they had any rooms available for the night. The woman at the front desk was very nice, hard of hearing, but no big deal. There were a few vacancies and the price was right, so we jumped on it! Got out luggage and dropped it off in the room. The rooms are dated, but clean...we were on the 2nd floor, so we were able to have the windows open!!! (coming from northern Illinois...oh what a wonderful thing!!!) The bathroom was small, and some of the tile cracked, but again....clean. The next day we hung out at the pool and contemplated staying the whole time at the Keystone, and called to see about canceling our reservations in Siesta Key, but we could not cancel. We decided that next time we were back in the area, we would stay at the Keystone again. We are booked for 2 nights before our cruise in March 2009.
This is a motel...not a hotel, so it does not have all the amenities that a larger hotel would have...but its really charming in its own way!
Bit of trivia....there is a horseshoe in front of the entrance to the motel, the owner placed it there when they opened...I believe it was opened in the mid 60s.

  • Liked — Its kind of like a kitschy, 60s style motel, no frills, but great price!
  • Disliked — I wish the beds were more comfortable

Our family (2 adults & 2 9yr old girls) stayed at the Keystone Motel over Christmas 2008. We were thrilled with the personal service, the location and basically everything else. The location to local restaurants, the Merry Pier and the beach is unbeatable. At night time the sound from nearby restaurants playing music could be heard from our unit, but it wasn't worse than my dishwasher running at night in my own home. Nobody lost any sleep due to it. Right from the start Mary made sure that we had enough towels in our unit and the towels/dish towels were changed daily. The children had fun in the pool and we appreciated it that Bob turned up the pool heater for them. The owners are friendly and very helpful and made us feel welcome right from the moment we walked in. The fact that there were not hoardes of people on the beach during the day was exactly what we wanted and the lack of traffic on Gulf Way added to the charm of the area. The historic atmosphere was wonderful. For those who want franchise fast food restaurants within walking distance - this is not the place for you. However, you will find an excellent grocery store and other stores only 3 kilometers away - not inconvenient at all. Mary and Bob, we will definitely be back.

The worst part about the Keystone is dealing with the elderly owner, who takes most of the reservations and works the desk usually. Be prepared to repeat yourself at least 3 times! When I originally tried to book a 2 bedroom (they only have 2) in December 2007 for June 2008, I was told it was too early for me to book (because I was not a regular), and that I should call back in April. I got antsy and called back in February/March, and was told that the 2 bedrooms were booked, but I could get a 1 bedroom with 2 king beds and a pull out couch in the living room. (It should be noted that when we actually stayed there, one of the two bedrooms was vacant our entire stay - very disappointing.)

We were staying with a group, and were the first to arrive around 1 in the afternoon. The owner was able to let us check in early, which was very nice. The 1 bedroom we had was pretty decent - it was a fairly open layout, although it should be noted that the bedroom has no doors, only 2 body towels were provided (for a room that sleeps six and was booked for 3 people!), and they do not provide soap or shampoo in the bathrooms. When we asked for additional towels from the front desk, we were given 1 additional towel, even though we explained that we would like more. After the first day, we were able to get additional towels by asking the housekeeper directly - she was extremely helpful and kind, and got a great tip at the end of our stay due to her helpfulness.

We really liked the pool area - it was kept clean, it was quiet, and it really wasn't used by anyone else but us during our stay. We had some friends staying at another hotel, and they were able to come and swim with us with no issues.

Overall, we had a great stay. We really felt it couldn't be beat for the price, and the location. It had just what we were looking for, quiet, relaxing, near the beach, etc. The owner was flighty when dealing with us, but we had no major issues that I originally feared (mainly, a lost reservation, because as a previous reviewer pointed out, they do not give confirmation numbers). I do know that other friends and family members had a number of issues when dealing with management, but we were pretty fortunate.

My husband and I went to St. Pete Beach for his college buddy's wedding at the Don Cesar. We couldn't afford to stay at the Don so we went with the Keystone Motel because it was on a list of suggestions provided by the bride, it had a pool, and best of all was cheap. The rest of his friends (about 15) had already booked rooms down the street at the Inn on the Beach which didn't have a pool.

I got a little worried about our choice of motel when I first made the reservation. I wondered if the woman that took the reservation was either very hard of hearing or just not paying attention. After giving her my credit card number over the phone she said, "OK, great, and what's your credit card number" about five times. I was worried she didn't have our reservation so I asked for a confirmation number and she said "We don't have those here." I knew to call the day before we left on our trip to confirm our stay, but again it took giving my name, which is not a difficult name, about 10 times before she said "Oh here it is."

After we flew into the Tampa Airport, we took a Super Shuttle and were the last ones to be dropped off at the motel at about 9:10pm so we were pretty tired when we got there...only to find the motel office lights off and door locked...with a sign saying the office closed at 9pm. One of the guests standing outside told us that the manager usually leaves a note on the door to check with the Hurricane restaurant next door if guests are checking in after 9 and that even though there was no note we should check with them as the owner also owns the Hurricane. The manager at the Hurricane called and left a message for the hotel manager at his house. After waiting outside for an hour with our luggage the manager (apparently the owner's son) drove up and checked us in...without apologizing once for the inconvenience. We even had to wait about another 10 mins. while he chatted with some girls that came in to say hi to him. So we already had a bad taste in our mouths at this point.

We got a basic motel room so I can't speak for the apartment rooms, but this room was nasty. The bathroom tile, toilet, and sink were obviously original to the motel, and the mold in the shower looked original to the motel as well. We dreaded taking showers the whole time we were there because it was so nasty you had to wear flip flops in the shower. The floors were never cleaned when we were there and I didn't see the maid cleaning the floors in other rooms. The comfortors were nasty too and had blood and other indescribable stains.

We invited our friends staying down the street to hang out at the pool with us one day but the manager, who never apologized for leaving us outside for an hour when we checked in, chased everyone out. We had a feeling they might not be allowed at the pool but there was no need for him to shout at the top of his lungs and handle the situation the way he did. We are all adults.

The night of the wedding we went to the one bar in Pass-a-Grill after the wedding and returned to our room late night at the same time as about six girls being loud and going into their room across the pool. One of our friends decided to stay with us (we had two double beds so it was not a problem). One of the guests came out and saw us going into our room and yelled at us, and the next morning the owner said she had gotten a complaint and accused us of having multiple people staying in our room. We just felt harrassed the whole time we were there.

In talking to families and elderly couples at the motel, they enjoyed their stay, but definitely avoid the motel if you are younger (under 35) and in a larger group. If you do choose to stay here because of the price and the pool, bring your shower shoes, be sure to check in before 9pm (though the owner walks away and locks the office door for hours at a time all day so you will likely have to wait around to check in anyhow), and be sure to throw the bed spread off the bed!

No problems here....we checked in early, had a great time at the pool and the beach. The hotel is next to the best restaurant in Pass A Grille The Hurricane. The best grouper on the beach and not to pricey for what you get. They do have a live band on the weekends but from our room we could not hear it after we went to bed.
The rooms are very clean and most have been remodeled with tile floors or wood. The beds are very nice and the decor is very fitting for the beach, but not tacky.
This is perfect for young couples or families with teenagers. Not so much for little kids unless they are content with the beach and pool. No game rooms or playgrounds.

Overall very nice. There is a lady that works there that is a little rough around the edges but all the other nice things kinda over power her gruff persona.

Will be staying here again.

The Keystone made for an AMAZING get away. The hotel is a diamond in the ruff and newly renovated. The people at the hotel are friendly and go out of their way to make the experience nothing but great. I will be back and hopefully sooner than later!!
