“Nice, but some problems”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

We recently stayed in Unit #3 at Sabal Palms. Our unit faced the gulf. Sabal Palms is in a beautiful location, the room is nice and the staff is very friendly.

We would give Sabal a perfect rating if they would correct 3 things:

1) The bright lights outside the front window can't be turned off or at least turned down and the bright light shining into the unit thru the shades makes it hard to sleep.

2) They offer free bikes for use which is a nice feature, but half of them had flat tires.

3) The view from the deck in front of the unit is spectacular, but the railing is so high, you need to stand up to enjoy the view. They should either have a lower railing or have tables and chairs that are higher than the railing so you can sit and enjoy the view.

Had a great stay at Sabal Palms Inn on Thanksgiving 2012. Very clean and the staff was very accomodating, thank you Julie. My husband and I rented the studio apt/ pool view. It was quiet, private and close proximity to the beach and downtown. We loved it! Can't wait to revisit Pass-a-Grille!

It's been several years since I've been in the St. Pete Beach area, and I was looking forward to staying at the Sabal Palms Inn again. Just like my other stays, the staff was friendly and very accomodating. I was pleasantly surprised to find that all the rooms were remodeled. All the rooms offer efficiency kitchens which is great for families with children. Your stay includes use of the pool, outdoor tables and grill, chairs for the beach(which happens to be directly across the street), and bikes to ride around town. Within walking distance are local restaurants, a shopping district on 8th, and a pier for boat rentals. If you're looking for a great place to relax and enjoy, this is it!

Room Tip: Rooms #1, 2 and 3 are gulf front and have spectacular sunset views.

When you find something really worth while, you usually try it again. That is the case with my wife and I. The room was very neat and clean, the view of the Gulf from the front porch absolutely gorgous and a very friendly staff. Easy walk to resturants in Pass-A-Grille or make use of the free bikes provided by the inn. You also have the option to cook in the room or go up to Shanners Land and Sea Market, get some kabobs, cook them on the grill as we did during our week stay. Very quiet location and both times met other wonderful guest.

Room Tip: Rooms 1-3 on front porch would be our first choice simply because of the view.

Great place to stay right on the bay at 13th st. in Passe a Grille. Restaurants and shopping only 5 short blocks away. All the amenities of modern civilization (Rite-Aide, traffic, banks) about 2 miles up the coast. Stayed in Rm 2 over Thanksgiving and they provided very nice weather and an enjoyable stay. The bikes were perfect for getting around town, pool small but warm and the room comfrotable for a four day stay. My wife suggested that our room was designed by a man and felt that a full length mirror, tub, lamp for the kitchen table, and a reading chair would elevated the rating. It is not your modern Condo enviroment, it is how casual beach living should be enjoyed. Thanks, Sabal Palm's

Room Tip: rooms 1,2,3 face the Bay. 1 and 3 have side windows

This is my second year in a row staying on St. Pete Beach. All the action is at the southern tip; Pass-a-Grille, so this year I decided to stay there.

The Sabal Palms is a small Inn--a converted house on a peaceful corner one block from the restaurants and directly across the street from the lovely beach. I stayed in Unit #8--upstairs with a small balcony overlooking the backyard and "pool." (It is actually a rather large hot tub/spa, but let's not split hairs.)

My room was immaculate. Not a speck of dirt to be found. The bed was very comfortable; the pillows and quilt very homey. The bathroom with shower was as clean as I could wish. The hot water and water pressure were fine. The room had both air conditioning (not needed in November when I visited), and windows that actually open, making possible a nice cool breeze for the room. There was also a fully equipped kitchenette, for those energetic and frugal souls who actually cook while on vacation (not me!) The manager, Eddie, was accessible and very kind and helpful.

My ONLY complaint (which prevented my rating from being the full 5 stars) was that Sabal Palms advertises the use of free bikes. There were plenty of bikes: tough old warhorse "cruisers" with one speed, pedal brakes, and wide tires--but every last one of them had either flat tires or tires that would not hold air more than an hour or so. All the chains and gears were rusty. This fleet of bikes is badly in need of some basic tune-up TLC! If you are a bicyclist, bring your tools and a can of lube with you and then all will be well! Seriously, the establishment needs to keep these bikes at least in basic good condition if they are going to advertise the use of them.

Look at that: I have spent one long paragraph on these bikes! It's only because it is SO PLEASANT to pedal around the southern tip of Pass-a-Grille: around the corner to the Tampa Bay side to the marina to watch the pelican population--much better than TV! And then over to the many restaurants and pubs. Guess what? You do not need to lock your bike in Pass-a-Grille. Nobody bothers your bike. I was told this by Eddie, and I tested it out over 3 days, using the only bike that did hold air in its tires--and he was correct. I thought I was dreaming, which is how you are SUPPOSED to feel on vacation!

Pass-a-Grille is the most mellow, lovely, affordable oasis of peace. I highly recommend it, and regardless of the bike situation, I will definitely stay at the Sabal Palms again. (I will need a 3-oz can of lube; wonder if bike tools will make it through Security in the airport?)

Room Tip: #8 has a nice little upstairs deck.

My husband and I had such a lovely time here. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are very clean. It is only steps to the gulf. Perfect location. Close to restaurants and shopping. Guests can use chairs, bikes, floats. The kitchen is small but suitable. Bathroom clean and efficient.

Room Tip: We stayed gulf-front in unit 2. Nice porch.
