What a Gem! Everything it should be with an extra helping of charm and elegance. The rooms are comfortable, without being fussy, romantic and charming. Clean, relaxing, entertaining, and the food is superb. Southern food and hospitality at it's finest. There is a small fenced garden with a koi pond and gazebo in the back that offers comfortable seating and a quit spot to read or relax with friends. Activities are readily available,Fishing, boating, bicycling, available from the Inn for a flat and inexpensive rate, or just walking. The ride or a walk is easy going with new sidewalks and the bike trail readily accessible. A small town rich in history. St. Marks has a marina, a Public park with a public boat ramp. and 2 restaraunts one of which offers live entertainment dockside. Sunrise and sunsets weave magic colors across the St.Marks river. Altogether a wonderful experience no matter what age. This is a must stay must see town and B&B for any tourist or traveller.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally charming and well equipped. The 2nd floor rooms have access to a sunny screene...

Finding the Sweet Magnolia Inn & Owners Denise and Andy has truly been a joy. We are having a motor vessel remodeled at Shield's Marina in St Marks. The Inn has been our home away from home for several days and visits in November 2012, and definitely will be home until our boat is finished! The themed rooms are very unique, spacious and comfortable, with common areas of porches and gardens that are inviting during your stay.
There are many special touches at the Sweet Magnolia that are exclusive to the very personal service provided by Denise and Andy, when you are a guest, you will as we do feel like family.

Room Tip: All are lovely

We are locals, now living just north of Destin, FL and we went to St. Marks last month - Sept 2012 - for a "lighthouse look-see" and a convertible drive down and up US 98 looking at the barrier islands, etc. St. Marks was cute and the Sweet Magnolia Inn was a real treat! I selected it from a TripAdvisor review, and was very glad I did. Denise and Andy Waters just took over this place about 5-6 months ago. (Older reviews may no longer be pertinent.) Very nice place - quaint, nice bedrooms (very comfortable!)...nice front porch on the main road, and ONLY about 2 blocks from a nice (local) seafood place on the river with a good (read - loud) country rock band (on a Saturday night). The real treat, though, was (besides the carafe of wine Denise provided along with a little cheese and cracker appetizer on arrival) that her husband Andy was on the front porch playing jazz on an electric keyboard with a friend of his from Tallahassee, Don Juan. (Go figure with that name...) Anyway Don had "brought his music along" that Saturday - apparently they get together regularly - and Don was playing with Andy on his trumpet and his fluegelhorn. We had a very nice informal private jazz concert on the front porch for a couple of hours Saturday afternoon! What a nice serendipitous anniversary treat! I would highly recommend this place. If you go there, perhaps you will luck out and find Andy jammin' with Don "Juan" or another of his musician friends. Andy made a GREAT breakfast as we left on Sunday, especially the cheese grits. Kudos to Denise and Andy for their effort to keep a nice little place like this alive, and thanks for a memorable experience and a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: 3 or 4 of the bedrooms (all?) have nice 4-poster beds and jacuzzi baths - quaint old house. Nice am...

This place is a diamond in the rough! I have been going to St Marks for 28 years now and never even thought twice about staying in a Bed and Breakfast, but now will NEVER stay anywhere else! I have always stayed in commercially based hotels and spent a WHOLE LOT MORE MONEY and never felt the way I did here. My son and I spent 4 days over the Labor Day weekend 2012 and it was "heaven". From the time I made the phone call to reserve a room until the time I left it felt like home (actually I didn't want to go home)! The caretakers Denise and Andy make you feel just like you are family and they have known you for years. They are genuinely warm, caring, accomodating and welcoming people. The feel of the inn is so warm and comfortable that you never want to leave. The grounds are beautiful, furnishings were warm and comfortable, the food was homecooked and excellent and spending time every night in the dining area having drinks with the other guests and the caretakers, was just like you we had known eachother our whole lives. I would HIGHLY reccomend spending time in this location, it really is "a little piece of heaven" that doesn't seem affected by the outside stresses of life!

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms! Beautiful place!

We spent three nights in the Sweet Magnolia Inn. Originally built as a general store more than a century ago, it also rented rooms on its upper floors. After a fire gutted the building it was rebuilt as a bed and breakfast and an upscale restaurant. The rooms are immaculate and nicely decorated. The space that once served as a restaurant is now where the owners serve a generous breakfast. The upstairs screen porch, which spans the back of the building, is spacious and airy, even on a hot summer's day. We used the inn as a base to visit many of the historic sites around St. Marks, Florida's second oldest city.

The whole point of a B&B, versus a standard hotel, is to immerse yourself in someone's private home, usually one which has been exceptionally well-furnished and equipped for its guests' personal comfort. The Sweet Magnolia Inn fits that description to a T, and, although a specific B&B experience might not be an exact fit for every traveller 100% of the time, this place is a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable sanctuary that most will enjoy.

All bedrooms and public areas in this spotlessly clean Inn are unique. Bathroom and vanity areas are very well-equipped, the towels and linens are luxuriously soft, and furnishings, while mainly asian and flower-themed, are somewhat eclectic and of the highest quality. Unusual and visually pleasing art and objects adorn the rooms and public spaces, and the entire place has a mysteriously relaxing feel. The new age music occasionally piped through a sound system in the dining room and public spaces (including outside) is soothing but not obstrusive.

As we were the only guests the night of our stay, we took a look at all the bedrooms before deciding to stick with our original choice, the Malibu Suite. The rooms are all comfortable: some have couches or setees, coffee or ocassional tables, a comfortable chair, or a desk area. Depending on your needs and desires, different rooms have a different "feel." The Malibu Suite has a separate shower in addition to its jacuzzi tub. The Sweet Suite, however, is the only room with a king-size bed. All others have queens.

The Inn has a lovely front porch and entrance, which is where you enter when you first arrive. Once you register, your key will let you in the guest entrance around back. You can enter the ground floor corridor where some of the rooms are located, or climb the enclosed wooden staircase and enter on the second floor. The second floor screened porch is marvelous, with tables, chairs, couches and a very inviting hammock.

There are so many wonderful extras, it's hard to know where to begin. Innkeeper Patricia is a wonderful hostess, offering snacks and a wealth of area information in an unobtrusive but helpful style. She left us a friendly note with tea and yogurt in the dining room fridge for an evening snack. Boiling water is always available. There is another small fridge in the second floor corridor, along with a bucket of ice and fresh coffee in the morning. There are several bicycles for guests' use outside the back door. A couple of cats offer entertainment and "kitty love" if you should need some, as we always do. There is an exotic koi pond out back (mosquito repellant advisable).

Some of the rooms have more windows than others, and the Malibu Suite has four, all facing the street (west). The afternoon sun creates a light and airy ambience, cleverly captured in the extensive use of glass in the room. But in the morning, the room is dark enough so that you can easily sleep in. The jacuzzi is slightly separated by glass block, which adds to the glittery effect. We used the tub, and supplied bath salts, in the morning, and it was absolutely luxurious. The supplied velvety soft thick terry robes were a nice touch.

There is a cozy sitting area near the front entrance, with a couch, extremely comfortable chair for reading, lots of reading material, and a work desk. The wireless wi-fi did not work when we were there, but we forgot to ask about it, as our stay was only overnight, and the atmosphere made us forget the high-tech world outside. The Inn is only 100 yards from the end of the road, and the Riverside Cafe and several other dining options are walking distance. We enjoyed a relaxing and delicious sunset meal at Riverside Cafe, overlooking the St. Marks River.

Breakfast at the Sweet Magnolia was wonderful: scrambled eggs, thick crispy bacon, some cheese, fresh fruit, fresh-baked biscuits, juice, coffee, etc. We had to have a second biscuit, they were so delicious. The dining room manages to be simultaneously fancy and casual, and Patricia is an attentive hostess. As we were the only guests, we spent a good while swapping life stories. Her knowledge of area attractions and features is extensive, and would be very helpful to anyone spending some time in the area.

Bottom line: It's hard to tell if you will love a B&B until you travel there, meet the hosts, sleep in a bed, and eat the breakfast. This one is a winner though, and really functions as a physical and mental respite for the weary traveller. Keeping an open mind helps at any B&B, and we left the Sweet Magnolia Inn thoroughly relaxed and refreshed, as if we had just spent a week at a spa. Review their website, call and ask questions about the rooms, and relax and enjoy yourself when you go.

My husband and I made reservations for 2 nights at the Sweet Magnolia so we could attend the annual St. Marks Stone Crab Festival. After this stay we made a commitment to ourselves to avoid all B&B's except the truly well-known and highly reviewed. Previously we had stayed at the Wakulla Lodge and ,in hindsight, we wish we had returned there for this trip. Upon entering, my immediate thought was, "Why do B&B's always have the look/feel that they were decorated from garage sales? This one was no different.. We were escorted to the kitchen, of all places, by the hostess (and only person there during our visit) to register and pay in advance. Our room was clean, but uncomfortable. The only place to sit was a tiny, one person, love seat with poor lighting for reading. I had to sit on the bed to watch TV. Since the bed posts blocked my husband's view of the TV he sat on the love seat. It was not a room to unwind and relax. Signs on the window sills stated we could not open the windows. This was a major concern for us since it was a beautiful, cool Fall weekend for Florida and we would have loved to open our room windows for fresh, humidity free, air. The temperature was kept at a constant 75 and this was too warm for us. There was no exhaust fan in the toilette room and the one above the tub did not work. Also, there was no exhaust fan in the windowless public restroom downstairs which is against code. There was no hot water at the vanity sink for my husband to shave. The bathroom became a very hot area in the mornings with the lights on and no open windows or exhaust. The 3 terribly mismatched and worn throw rugs in the room were not clean and the bedspread did not smell fresh. We were very surprised that no one came in to make the bed or freshen up the room after our first night. The common area for guests on the first floor was a small corner and dingy with no comfortable seating, poor lighting for reading and no TV. The dining area was bright and cheerful. The breakfast can only be described as food. We did not stay for Sunday breakfast and dined at the Wakulla Lodge instead.. Hot tea and coffee was available at all times. Our impression was that the hostess/innkeeper was doing the best with what she had to work with but possibly the owners did not want to invest the necessary funds to bring the B&B to a nice level of comfortability and decor. Our total bill was $285.00 for 2 nights. We made a bad choice and we hope you don't do the same.
