St George Inn
Reviewed June 28, 2012

We usually rent a house on St. George Island, but decided to try the Inn this time. Had I known what I know now, I would have chosen a house one more time. The air conditioning was a window unit that was way to small to cool the room. The only time it cooled off was late at night, then you could enjoy the loud, hideous, music across from our room. The music would go on untill 1:30 am or so. The room was not cleaned the four days of our stay, but they had the gaull to have an envelope there to tip the cleaning lady. I want to add that I almost fell through the porch floor while walking on the side that faces the little store and realty company. There is no question that I will visit St. George Island again, but I will not stay or recomend the Inn to anyone....not even my dog.

The inn was extremely run down on the outside. Website pictures not accurate. They imply it's a couple of steps from the beach. In fact the inn is on a carpark. It is central though and a walk to the local eateries and right next door to the supermarket and a short walk to the beach. The bathroom was tiny and very outdated. Only 2 towels provided for 5 of us. The kitchen had no dish liquid, no oven dishes, , no bowls and only 2 plates. The innkeeper was helpful though and immediately found us some of things that were missing. The mattress cover in rhe sofa bed was disgusting and dirty. There were chairs on the balcony but not private balconies and right on the car park. Overall ok stay but was difficult to self cater.

We often rent homes on the island, but having only a day to stop by we opted for the Inn. They are happy to let you look at available rooms and choose one. Some have beautiful views but all have access to the gorgeous wrap around porch. We watched the sun set over the bay and then enjoyed the rocking chairs on
The porch into the evening. Rooms are quaint and bathrooms can be small but the staff and relaxing atmosphere were worth the price.

We stayed 3 nights mid-week,brought along our dog.Was expensive, as is everything in this area. We enjoyed the central location of the Inn-were able to walk everywhere. Our room had a nice view of the bay in the distance. The Inn is in need of renovations--paint peeling everywhere, broken blinds and moldy shower-curtain.Our room was never serviced--returned from sightseeing everyday to full trashbaskets and no clean towels. The lady at the desk(different one each day) always had a quick excuse for this and gave us our small ration of towels and trashbags. Bought soap next door at the market....Too bad, this could be a really nice place if they kept it clean and were more hospitable.

Room Tip: Take a room with a view as we did--some rooms face the grocery next-door.

we were quite pleased with the St. George Inn. the location was convenient to everything and the staff was very pleasant and helpful. it's a beautiful building with very nice floors and carpets and the rooms are nice and large. the furnishings are nothing special and the bed was a bit soft for our tastes, but was certainly comfortable enough. there is no view of the ocean, but it's only a two minute walk to the beach. the exterior of the building shows a lot of wear and tear, but that's common in the salt air environment. we found the place to be very quiet and peaceful and although the bar across the street had a band until midnight we found it almost inaudible in the room with the doors closed (but pleasant to listen to when sitting on the veranda).

If we ever have occasion to return, we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

If you want to stay on St. George Island, you have two hotels to choose from. Stay here. If you want to stay in a nice hotel, then don't stay on St. George Island. If you still want to stay on St. George Island, read on. The St. George Inn is a creaky old building in the heart of the business district, such as it is, of St. George Island, within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. My husband and I chose to stay at the inn after reading Trip Advisor reviews, for better and for worse. We happened to stay on the island during a quiet week in April, which was perfect for us, but I cannot imagine how noisy the place must be during a busy week on the island. We liked our 2nd floor room, with new mattress and pillows, facing the bay, and we liked the door to the veranda, but we didn't like the fact there was no window to open. Because the veranda is a public place it is not possible to leave the door open just for some air. You can hear the floors creak when the wind blows and other guests walk around, or enjoy their honeymoon activities in the next room. While we enjoyed the early evening bands at Eddie Teach's across the street (they ended by 8pm during our visit), we were warned the bands can legally play until midnight and be as loud as they want, and you have no way to shut the noise out, especially if your room faces the bay (best view) and therefore overlooks Eddie Teach's. The staff, both Melissa and Kristie, were wonderful and accommodating and ready with restaurant and sightseeing recommendations, and did all they could to make the visit a special one, but it's tough to overcome the limitations of an old building desperately in need of updating from top to bottom, including all the exterior painting and interior plumbing fixtures. There is no breakfast available at the inn, but its location next to the market means you have easy access to food, and every room has a microwave and refrigerator. The downside is the noisy refrigerator, and ours gave off a good bang about every half hour. The rooms get tidied every day of your stay, including fresh towels and beds remade with same sheets, but the rooms don't get cleaned. My husband and I loved our visit to St. George Island, and we were happy enough with our first visit to the St. George Inn, but we won't rush to have a second visit to the inn.

Room Tip: All the rooms are different, so call and ask questions about size of bed, size of room and additiona...

A beautiful old hotel right in the center of "town" which made everything walkable. It really does need updating and the mattress was just terrible - collapsing to the side as you got in. A mismash of furniture and a large filled dumpster just in back of the Inn which was a few feet away from where we could sit outside of our room. No icemaker or ice buckets. We chose it because it is pet friendly and we brought our Becker with us. Harry A's , the Beach Bucket restaurant and the Blue Parrot restaurant were all pet friendly as well. We were surprised that there was so much litter in the center area - the majority of the island looks like rental properties and very clean. An investment in upgrading would make this a delight.
