“Beautiful Room -one of the nicest in St. Augustine!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2010

My fiance and I take an annual New Year's trip to St. Augustine, and we have stayed in many different hotels and inns. We wanted to be a little closer to the beach this year, and read some of the great reviews of this hotel and thought we would give it a try. For a room this spacious with a jacuzzi tub at one of the bed and breakfasts in town, especially on New Year's Eve, it would set you back well over 200/night. Yet, we were only a 5 minute drive into the historic district, had a great view of the beach, and had this spacious, romantic room with a balcony and jacuzzi tub. Who could ask for anything more? :)

We did have a problem when we first checked in. We were brought to our room, only to discover an ant problem all along the side of the jacuzzi tub. We called immediately and they brought us to another room and discounted our stay. A minor setback, and the rooms were very clean aside from this problem we had at first. The new room was beautiful, and we appreciated the staff being so kind and helpful about this matter.

Don't miss out on breakfast downstairs at the hotel's restaurant ....one of the best breakfasts we have ever had!!! Everything is from scratch and the blueberry crepe is to die for!

After staying at a few other hotels in St. Augustine, this is hands down our favorite. The front desk staff is courteous and professional. We always stay in King room with Jacuzzi tub and balcony. The beds are very comfortable, although I did notice one reviewer complaining about the sheets coming off the mattress, and yup that they did! Other than that we love this place. Love the Wolfgang Puck coffee in the room! Oh and it seems like they are now getting room service-we ordered from the downstairs restaurant menu and within 40 minutes had one of the best dinners I have ever had delivered to our room. Appetizer portions are huge, and excellent quality. (Ahi Tuna very fresh) We will always stay here when in St. Augustine.

Spent one night here on a romantic mini-get away and were very pleased with the hotel. The hotel is very clean and well kept, as are the rooms. Rooms are spacious and well appointed with coffee maker, microwave and fridge. We didn't have time to take advantage of the pool or fitness center, but both looked comfortable and user friendly. Ate dinner at the hotel's restaurant, La Cocina and was thrilled with the menu (several innovative vegetarian selections) and the service.

This is a beautifully decorated hotel. The beds are a dream as is the decor of the rooms. The staff at the hotel are wonderfully friendly, helpful and accomodating. I can not wait to go back to St. Augustine Beach and stay here again. The pool and jaccuzzi are lovely. Our room was spaciously and very comfortable and decorated beautifully. The food smelled very delicous coming from the resturant. The Wifi was easly to connect to. The water was nice and hot. You must see this place and stay here. Sorry, I don't have any pics to up load. You will not be disappointed. We got a very good rate for our room. Iris and Jacob were at the front desk. They are the best! Stay here you will not be sorry! Beautiful Spanish influence decor as well as very lush and posh! A++++++++++++

I'll be honest with you... I've avoided writing a review for Castillo Real because I was kind of hoping that no one else would discover this gem of a retreat. However, this hotel seems to be "on the map" now, so I figured I'd go ahead and give it its due praise.

I've stayed here several time. The staff at the front desk have always been very helpful in getting me the room I desired. The place is very clean, there are dvd players in the rooms, the artwork is funky, the bedspreads opulent, and the fully tiled showers are huge! From the south entrance you can walk to the beach in less than two minutes.

Drawbacks: the beds are a little on the soft side (some reviewers have reported a bad night's sleep) and you can hear noises from the hallway through the door. My best advice is to request a room at the end of the hallway away from the elevators.

There is a restaurant and a fitness center, but I've tried neither. I'd recommend Cafe Eleven for breakfast (it's directly across the street from the hotel, and if you eat there you probably won't need lunch) and Mango Mango's for an inexpensive dinner (they're about a mile south on Beach A1A).

My wife and I really liked the decor of the hotel and the large jacuzzi tub. The hotel is a very short walk to the beach and the food in the restaurant is very good.

That being said, for the price of the "Ocean View with Private Balcony", I expected at least a comfortable bed. Both of us left with sore backs from the bed and the flatter than pancake pillows. This was the major issue with the hotel. For the price they charged for the room, the sheets should stay on the bed when you sleep (these didn't), the bed should be very comfortable (this one is probably at the end of it's life) and the pillows shouldn't seem like left overs from a Motel 6.

Other minor points. There was an ocean view, but the view, between two house was stretching the term as was "private balcony". Yes, the balcony had walls on both sides so the rooms next to yours couldn't look onto your balcony, but it also overlooked the pool. A personal balcony yes, but private, again a bit of a stretch.

We were also a little disappointed that even though there is a restaurant in the hotel, they don't offer room service.

Stayed here for 3 nights recently. Stayed in a King Room with Jacuzzi with view of the ocean. Room was good and very clean with all the amenities you could need. Great view of the ocean beyond. Beach was only a minutes walk so great location. Restaurant looked expensive for area so avoided. Only real complaint was with the front desk staff. Found them to have the smiles and say welcome but really weren't welcoming. Was reminded 3 times not to smoke or there would be a fine - have never smoked so found it OTT but wasn't offered any assistance with my bags. Checkout was a disaster as I am a European Choice Privileges member which seemed to stretch the skills too far and the lady left 2 people on hold on the phone while failing to be able to deal with me. Would suggest training for the most public facing staff in the hotel.
