Skip the public beach (do you really want to risk being hit by a car while you sunbathe?) and pay the 3 bucks to go to the GORGEOUS beach at Anastasia State Park. No cars are allowed on this part of the beach and you can swim, surf, sunbathe, walk, or bicycle in relative peace (oh yeah, you can fish, too, if you don't mind hauling your equipment on foot past the swimming and surfing areas).
There's also an inlet area where you can take windsurfing lessons or rent a kayak, plus there's a bike rental kiosk if you haven't brought your own. There are public bathrooms and outdoor showers (note to visitors from other countries: you must keep your bathing suit ON at the public shower).
If you choose to camp, you will need to pay an additional fee and bring your own tent or RV (there are no rental cabins at Anastasia State Park), but you will have use of private warm-water showers in a bath house.More
