“Horrible Cigarette Smoke Smell In The Room.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2013

One night stay was enough for us! The room reeked of strong cigarette smoke smell even though the staff claimed the room had never been a smoking room. The smell emanated from the carpet, the walls, the bedding, everything in the room. We were in St Augustine for four nights but only stayed here one night after we discovered the quality of the room. I spoke to the desk staff about the smell and they only offered to spray some febreeze in the room. Hotel is old and dated. The hotel is not in the historic District and NOT close enough for a comfortable walk. The room was smaller than a normal Hampton Inn and felt cramped. It was a very disappointing experience and certainly not typical of the Hampton chain, a Hampton Inn is normally a good bet and I stay with them quite often. The price did not make this room acceptable!

One night stay and that was enough! Hotel is old and dated. Had king suite on 3rd floor. Heavy furniture and very dated furnishings. Elevator smelled horrible. Sign at front desk says "Pardon us while we renovate." saw no evidence but it can't happen soon enough.
Listed as historical district. I chose this hotel for two reasons. Hampton Inns are usually a good bet. We stayed at one in Ocala the previous week and it was lovely. Second reason... Wanted to be close enough to historical area to walk. This hotel is at least three miles, not walking distance.

A real disappointment and $200 a night!

We asked for king room but received two queens and the room was very cramped. Desk and chair very close to one bed and we could not reach a floor lamp. There was an uncovered electric outlet. Hair dryer not working and asked for replacement that we did not receive. Afternoon staff were very welcoming and helpful. Evening staff left desk unattended and did not answer phone calls. Although advertised as in 'historic district' it was more than a mile to the district. Dark busy road at night, not comfortable walking in this area after dark.

Beds were comfortable, linens nice and bathroom large.
Clean.

We stayed here at the end of January, 2013 and were totally disappointed. Our room was huge BUT it faced the railway tracks and road and the noise was horrible. The carpet and furniture were in terrible condition. I would not put my suitcase on the floor! The hotel was being 'renovated' and we were told new furniture had been installed, but the carpet was being waited for. Our room had very old, torn furniture and old carpet. In the bathroom there were small bugs crawling on the counter. There was no hot water in the evening. The exercise room was obviously an after thought. It was a very disappointing experience and certainly not what we consider typical of the Hampton chain. The price did not make this acceptable!

Room Tip: Check out other options or ask to see your room prior to paying for it!

This Hampton property is located on US Route 1, right next to the Intracoastal Waterway in St. Augustine. One of the city's claims to fame is Flagler College, named after Henry Flagler, the man who brought the railroad to Florida's East Coast. The successor to that railroad is still in St. Augustine, and runs between US Route 1 and the Intracoastal. My room happened to face Route 1, and I was able to hear the trains all night. And yes, they do run at all hours. Otherwise the room was good for the price - the air conditioning and my general tiredness made for a decent sleep. Ok for a stop off, but the hotel is NOT hear St. Augustine's Historic DIstrict; in fact it's a hike. If you're a HiltonHHonors member like me, try and get a room at the Hilton IN the historic district.

Room Tip: Try to stay to the rear of the property, not near US Route and the CSX Railroad.

Quick check-in by Sean and there was a line of people waiting. He was efficient and friendly. He seemed to be flying solo and did a fine job. We asked for a quiet, king room and, yes, we got what we asked for. The hotel is a little bit of a walk to the historic district, but not bad. The hotel is updated, the rooms are decorated well and there is plenty of free parking. We have stayed in a B&B in the last few visits to St. Augustine which was expensive. The rate here is half of an B&B and just as nice. If you are looking for a lovely place, this is it.

Room Tip: If you like quiet room ask for the third floor in the back of the hotel....heaven!!

Great hotel and staff. Couldn't be more helpful and attentive to all of our needs. Recent renovations are making the hotel even better. Love the cleanliness and convenience. The complimentary breakfast included fruit, juice, breads and pastries, cereals, yogourt. It is really hard to beat the value for the price. We love Hampton Inns and this was as good as any of the others where we have stayed.
