Owner description: Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

“And Students Study Here!”

As we live in Oxford! UK we are used to seeing some impressive colleges, but this place, in its own way, is every bit as impressive. The furniture, decor, ceilings and Tiffany glass have to be seen to be believed for a university building. initially I wondered how it was that sometimes boisterous students didn't cause some damage, but when our excellent second year guide told us the college was "dry" then I understood. Of course it helps that in the US alcohol is not allowed until the age of 21, whereas in the UK it is 18. The US have definitely got this law right!

“Outstanding Facility and Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 23, 2013

I took the tour on Sunday, December 15 when it was pouring rain. That didn't dampen the spirit inside this beautiful facility. Our tour guide was a young man who is a senior history major at the college. He was so knowledgeable, and kept everyone in the group waiting for more pieces of the history of Flagler College (Ponce de Leon Hotel). That morning they were having a Breakfast with Santa for children, so the beautiful dining hall included Santa and holiday photo ops. Just seeing the dining hall and the parlor preserved as it once was was a thrill. Thank you Flagler College for allowing the public to experience this facility. Students...you are so lucky to have such a facility to enjoy.

“Great tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2013

What an incredible place to see! The young man (a senior at the College, a history major) was very knowledgeable and gave us a great tour. I am a docent at Flagler's competing hotel, The Tampa Bay Hotel (now the H. B. Plant Museum, part of the University of Tampa), so I was very interested in seeing our sister ship. It did not disappoint. Since Flagler was very involved with many of the other St. Augustine sites, this is a good place to start.

“Get Schooled at the College!”

Emma was extremely knowledgeable; she made the tour that much better. Definitely worth the visit. I don't recommend it for small kids or toddlers as there really isn't much to keep them entertained (at least the guided tour part).
