Owner description: Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

I transferred here from a large state run university and this has been a much better experience! All of the staff, aside from the business office are so helpful and nice! Many people have gone out of there way to be helpful here. That was not at all my experience before coming here. The small class sizes also make it easy to get to know people with the same major.

My 10 year old says, "when we went to Flagler College, the architecture was very beautiful and everything looked like it just fit in the right place and it was so cool. The ceiling of the lobby was stunning."

As you can see from the above, it's not only impressive to adults but to children as well. We highly recommend taking an hour to check it out. It provides an awe inspiring sense of what it must have been like to live an opulent life at the turn of the last century.

If you only have time to visit one attraction in St. Augustine, this is the one to go to. Our guide who was a college student at Flagler did an exceptional job in explaining all of the history behind the original hotel that is now a college. We were not at all rushed through and it was well worth the cost of the ticket for the tour.

What a step back in time. I could just imagine the elite coming for the winter season. We had a wonderful informative guide. She's a college student. Everything is in beautiful condition. What a great jewel to the city!
