Owner description: Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

Good use of history as it was converted to a school from a former hotel. Good to maintain its value and moreso that it feeds minds.

“Flagler College - Former Hotel Ponce de Leon”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

If you have an interest in History this is a must stop. Carson was our guide and he was very informative. The tour starts with a video to provide some background (so arrive 15 min. before tour time if you can). The information and setting of this tour takes care of itself. I won't spoil you with details. To me the architecture and the stories are amazing, I loved it.

“History revisited”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

We had an outstanding tour guide--recent graduate. The pre-tour video is educational. We learned a lot about Flagler and Florida history. The building itself is just beautiful-- The actual tour is short, but the rooms visited exquisite.

“Walking around Flagler College, formerly Flagler Hotel”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

The former hotel, the first in Florida, built by Henry Flager,is a gorgeous property, beautifully maintained now as a college dorm. The lobby is spectacular and must have been a huge draw for winter visitors.
