Owner description: Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

“Beautiful Piece of History”

Flager College is a must-visit in St. Augustine. If you can, take the tour, it is very worth it. The incredible detail used in making this hotel takes you back to a time of glitz and glamor, and I appreciate so much how the college has preserve this beautiful piece of Florida's, and the United States's, history.

“Must see!”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

After recommended by the Old Town Trolley, we took the tour of Flagler College/Ponce de Leon Hotel. Carson was our guide and he was amazing. The knowledge that this student guide had was incredible. Lots of information and history for a one hour tour. All the Tiffany glass in the Dining Hall was definitely a sight to see. Well worth your time.

I plan on going to college here after I graduate high school partially because of the reason that this school is so beautiful. I love the Tiffany glass and the dining hall is absolutely stunning! I can't wait to see the dorms and attend this school!

“Lucky guide”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

We were there at the end of the day and lucked out having our own guide who was a student at the college. He did a wonderful job of sharing history, highlights, and interesting facts about the then college, past Ponce de Leon hotel.
