Owner description: Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

While I did not get to go into any of the buildings, I did walk the grounds and the play is absolutely wonderful. You can definitely see that there was a lot of money spent on the place. The student (at least I think they were students) were very helpful with directions and assistance.

MY first visit to Flagler College was as a dues paying parent of a freshman student. Never heard of it until my daughter announced she was accepted and plan to attend. Once we arrive and deposited clothes in the dorm, our historical adventure began. The background of the founding of the college is amazing. The tour consisted of the history of Flagler and the development of his hotels, viewing of the largest collection of Tiffany glass in the US., the building expansion for the college and the philosophy of the liberal arts college. Philosophically, it was a blessing for this father's ears:.No booze in the rooms and no student nightly exchanges!!! IT IS A GREAT TOUR!!!

I went on a Saturday morning for a walking tour with a visiting sister-in-law and was amazed by the student's knowledge of the buildings. It was like entering a time machine back to the early 1900's when the rich really knew how to live! Amazing Tiffany glass windows in the student dining hall, and lovely surroundings. Definitely worth the small amount they charge for the tour.

Love it except the traffic! Don't go on holiday weekends. The parking is impossible. Stay at The St. Francis Inn. TOTALLY cool.
