Owner description: Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

“Absolutely the highlight of our vacation.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2012

We took the tour & were amazed at the history & the beauty of the college. The tour guide was a college student & she was extremely well versed int he history of StAugustine as well as Flager College. It is unbelievable that something like that could have been built in 18 months. The stained glass dining room, the extensive marble, the carved wood trim, everything was absolutely beautiful.

“Don't Miss This”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2012

All the positve reviews on Flagler College are spot on. The building is beautiful, both inside and outside. The tours are at 10AM and 2PM, $7 and can last up to an hour. Our student guide was very good and quite humorous. Alot of interesting details. I wish my school cafeteria had looked like the one here.....

“St. Augustine's finest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2012

Took the 2:00 p.m. tour on the first day of our visit to St. Augustine. This was the highlight of our visit. The tour was conducted by a student of the college who was very knowledgeable and pleasant. It is a beautiful building and the history is fascinating. It takes about an hour and it was the best spent hour of the visit and the best $7 fee I ever paid. I definitely recommend this tour to everyone. We are still telling our friends about it!
