We have just returned from 2 weeks visiting family in St. Augustine. Save for Harry's, Smokin D's BBQ and 4 Rivers Smokehouse, all of which were great for what they are, and our meal at the Reef, our trip was a culinary disaster. I had the seared tuna to start, the Grouper Oscar and Key Lime pie, all of which were excellent. My brother-in-law complained that his risotto was undercooked, but I thought it was perfect, and the waiter, who was most knowledgeable about the menu, deducted it from the bill, without hesitation, and of his own doing, and was very polite and apologetic. We dined with 2 children 3 and 5, and that didn't pose any problem either. The food was better than when I last attended 4 years ago. It wasn't cheap ($89 for a couple, without alcohol), but it was the best dinner of the trip, and surpassed the food at what is considered the finest restaurant at Venice Beach, South FL, which I shan't name but is well known. Incidentally, the cheesy grits at the Reef are sublime (I acquired a taste for them at Harry's - Shrimp 'n Grits - which I am hoping to emulate at home).
