We haven't been here in a few years, and now wish we had not neglected to come regularly when in the downtown St. Augustine area. The last time we were here the place was packed with lots of out of state tourists and there was a long wait for our table. Nothing wrong with lots of out of state tourists, but sometimes that atmosphere can detract from the memory of a good meal. This time the weather was cool, wet and windy outside and there was no wait for our table during a recent weekday noon hour.
We each ordered the half and half lunch, my wife chose the 1905 Salad and the Spanish Bean Soup. The salad was prepared at our table with a deft hand, and was a delicious combination of lettuce, meats, cheese and house dressing. The soup was a very flavorful offering, with the chorizo sausage providing a hearty base note. The Cuban Black Bean Soup and Cuban Sandwich I ordered was exactly what I was hoping for, bringing back memories of some of the best examples of each I enjoyed while exploring small family run places in South Florida where English is a second language, and the food as authentically Cuban as it gets.
For excellent food in a beautiful environment, with service that is almost flawlessly attentive, the Columbia is a great choice.
