“*Band* of Pirates”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2007

The band director at my daughter's middle school booked us a 2 night stay at the Pirate Haus for our Spring Adventure. It was definitely an adventure. The St. Augustine atmosphere along with the funky, fun style at the Pirate Haus was a great time had by all. The kids and chaperones had the whole Pirate Haus to ourselves. The students really enjoyed having the outdoor rooftop patio for our Pizza Time dinner the night we arrived. We then followed it by a Pirate cruise with an authentic captain and crew. The next morning everyone had a chance to enjoy their fill of *pirate* pancakes and the adults got to have some great coffee. The host, Conrad, and the hostess, Elaine, were delightful and entertaining for the kids. The kids peppered Conrad with questions and he graciously answered. After breakfast we headed to Ripley's Believe it or Not museum and then on to the Fort....where we watched a re-enactment of the cannon being fired. To our surprise and delight, we recognized one of the cannon crew as our own Pirate Haus host, Conrad!!! That afternoon we all had free time to explore the cobblestone streets and shops. It was wonderful!! The smell coming from Kilwin's Ice Cream and Candy shop on Legacy Trail, wafts through the street. The last day we were there we went to the Alligator Farm, it was fine, just a bit overpriced, in my opinion.

By far the best part of the stay was the Pirate Haus. I am planning on my own family to take a trip there this spring....and have our own pirate adventure.

See ya then, Conrad and Elaine..............

  • Liked — The location and welcoming atmostphere of the Pirate Haus. It's not your *average* hotel stay.
  • Disliked — can't think of anything.............

It's all in your attitude. If you're four retired folks about to enter a hostel environment and you're looking forward to sleeping in bunks and sharing a bath, I have a word for you. Aargggh. We'd been vacationing around Florida for two weeks and by now we'd had our fill timeshares. It was time for... The Pirate Haus, a decorator's dope dream featuring brilliant murals, hearty hospitality, inexpensive beds and just enough common space that we could play Scrabble with abandon. All this, just a stone's throw from St. Aug's tourist attractions. Of course we were NOT looking for cooties and didn't find any. Oh, should I mention? We're the type of retirees who don't mind climbing stairs--this is a second-floor walk-up (stairs are delightfully illuminated with poetry). Our kindly host affected to be part Pirate, part social realist. He helped us navigate St. Aug's--panned a few establishments, raved about others, pointed out parts of town to avoid after dark. Thanks in part to his wise counsel, we sailed through our 3-night stay on the high seas and got our fill of post-colonial surrealistic sleeping adventures.

I thank you for your kind words, and you must be a wordsmith of sorts "a decorator's dope dream", makes me chuckle, though I don't think I'll use it in my advertising!! Thank you for choosing us!

This was, I think, our sixth stay at the Pirate Haus, and we had a great time as always. The Pirate Haus is great for families or a group of friends looking for a great, clean, and inexpensive place to stay. It's no-frills, but Conrad and Elaine are wonderful innkeepers and full of information about the area.

One of our favorite activities is headed down to the Taberna del Gallo for sea shanties with the Bilge Rats. A great time is had by all!

We look forward to our next stay in St. Augustine at the Pirate Haus!
