Excellent layout with 5 tee areas. Lots of sand around the greens and the course shape was very good. Greens were a little hard and did not hold high lofted shots well. Rough was thick. Pace of play was excellent and the twilight rate was fair.

Our round took almost 6 hours to complete. The Ranger told us that there was an outing ahead of us and mentioned that we would likely not finish before dark. Of course, no refund was offered and there was no mention of an outing when we booked the tee time. We also had lunch at the clubhouse before our round. We ordered our food and gave the waitress/bartender a tip. One guy in our group picked up a menu and noticed that all orders are automatically assessed a 20% tip. We spoke to Derrick, one of the owners, to complain about the charge and to highlight that this is not posted anywhere except for within the menu. He defended the practice as a way for him to keep employees. The golf course is boring and slow and the 20% surcharge is ridiculous.

Like the course, but plan on five hours, with lots of waiting at the tee box, as the pace of play is very slow. No active management by course advisors to move players along.

My first round in St. Augustine was at South Hampton, and it was very enjoyable. The staff was exceptionally courteous, and the course was in great shape. The fairways were slighty more forgiving than other courses in the area, and the greens were enjoyable for putting (unlike most other area courses, where I spent the day putting on a surface that resembled a kitchen table).
My only reservation centered around the distances - the blue tees play 6005 yds (69.0/121), while the next longer black tees play 6479 (71.3/131). A distance in-between would have been ideal, but as a 17 hdcp, I didnt feel at all guilty about starting off on the blues...
If you are coming down to visit JAX/St. Augustine, make South Hamption a part of your golf vacation - you will not be disappointed...
