I've been to Ft Menendez twice now and have had a great time there twice. You do need a good tour guide as it makes all the difference in your trip. The fort is meant to be interactive and something to spend your time playing old games, grinding corn, trying on equipment, dipping candles and learning about history. If you choose to participate and not just observe then you get more out of the experience. My experience was fantastic on the first trip because the guide (a nice young man) truly enjoyed what he was doing and tried to get everyone involved in every aspect of the tour. On the second trip with friends the female guide started rushing through everything. Thank G-d she was replaced by another guide and we started the entire experience over. This time our friends got to experience more of everything they had. The trip is what you make of it so push yourself to interact, try things, crush shells and corn, dig out a canoe with sea shells, take pictures on a throne and make sure you get one at the helm of the ship.

“Good time!”

We had a blast at Ft. Menendez! It was pretty slow when we went (3rd week of Feb) around 10:30am so it was pretty cool to be there pretty much by ourselves. My kids aged 15, 14 and 12 had a good time being soldiers and answering trivia questions for coins which they later used to buy stuff with at the giftshop. Even the adults got to participate and earn money for the gift shop! "Esperanza" and "Maria" were very informative! We spent about 2 hours there but it was well worth the riches in knowledge we gained. Fort Menendez was one our funnest and most interactive things to do while in St. Augustine. Would definitely recommend you go there!

As I believe a member of our group said .... The visit was awesome. Two of our party work for a very well known amusement park in Orlando and the guide "Armando" was so good at making us laugh. Two of the group are from England and they loved the interactive and fun way of taking in "New World" history. Thanks for the fun!!!

“Total desaster”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

I loved visiting St. Augustine. But, unfortunately, my first and last ever visit to Fort Menendez is clearly my worst experience at any attraction in Florida. We were received nicely, but there was no functioning guide, except a young woman that only wanted us out as soon as possible. After we paid the entrance fee, to this the tiny made up Fort, we found that there were three or four schools having activities. The "guide" said that if we had any questions we could ask her, but we were not allowed to go into the places where the schools were having their activities... basically everywhere. This was extremely unfair to us. But we kept waking around. Our children wanted to explore the wooden boat, but guess what? They would need to wait for about 30 more minutes because a school was using it. And yes, the "guide" continued insisting that whenever we wanted to leave the place she could give us some coins immediately so we could exchange for -worthless- stuff in the shopping store.

A waist of money, for sure. A lost of time, no doubt. An offensive approach of taking patrons' money but not of offering the services they ware suppose to.

As one of the owners of Fort Menendez, what happened to you was unacceptable, I am saddened and frustrated to hear the details of your visit to our facility. Let me offer my apologies and the following thoughts.
First you should know that if you're willing to get in touch with us here at Fort Menendez, we would be more than happy to refund your money and offer you a free pass to return with your family. We would love for you to give us another chance to enjoy our facility the way thousands of others have.
After reviewing your comments we have revisited our operation procedures and have made some changes as well as started a round of retraining. The front counter has been reminded to inform people when there are groups at our site, that their visit as a General Public participant may be less than our ultimate goal. At that point if they still choose to enter the grounds, they will be offered a discounted ticket.
The general public participants will be welcome to listen to the lectures; however, we must refrain from direct co-mingling with the school groups, since they have paid for an extended educational tour and most importantly, to ensure each students safety and protection while at our facility.
If we do have the opportunity to see you again, you may get a chance to see the new additions that we have begun adding to our fort area to enhance our customer's experience. We look forward to the possibility of talking to you and welcome any further feedback as this keeps us growing and improving.

We found Fort Menendez fun and informative. We enjoyed every minute of it. Actually being a part of the settlement is an excellent teaching tool. Our favorite stop!!
