Free!! (donations gladly accepted) You take a 5 min ferry ride across the river to the fort. The national parks ranger that accompanies you will give you a brief overview of the fort and history and then waits while you wander around and get to climb a ladder (!) to the rooftop of the fort. When everyone's done you come back on the ferry together. There is a good 7 min overview video at the visitor center, bathrooms and some BEAUTIFUL trees at the parking area.

It's worth the trip an a nice afternoon. There is a short nature trail as well as bathrooms and soft drink machines on the grounds. In the ranger office they show an 8 minute movie on the history of the area. The Park Service boat runs every hour and you stay at the fort for about 30-45 mins. The tour guides are dressed in period clothing and give an interesting talk about the history of the fort, allow you some time to wander around, then fire a cannon before you leave. The best part is it's all free.

What a value - free! Almost the best highlight of our trip, the local scene, nearby Crescent Beach, the re-enactors, and the history was wonderful. Make the short drive down and catch the free boat ride to the fort, the nature walk, and immerse yourself in the history of the locale.

A wrong turn on the drive to St. Augustine put me at Ft. Matanzas national monument. This is a very small historic fort that was built to guard a back entrance to St. Augustine. It's small, but fun to explore. If you can climb a straight ladder, go up on the roof for a great view. A nice ferry ride takes you to the fort, which is on an island, and a costumed re-enactor tells you about the fort's history. No restroom facilities are on the island. The fort is not set up to accommodate people in wheelchairs or with mobility issues, but they can still go around the exterior.

The grounds at the mainland are lovely for picnics, and in January 2010 a pair of owls were nesting in the trees. A short drive or walk south and you'll encounter some lovely beaches and dunes, perfect for getting away from crowds. Some wrong turns lead to unique delights, and this site was one of them. Allow approx. 2 hours.

We visited this with our 4 kids and really enjoyed this out of the way fort. It's a smaller fort, but located by the water and you take a boat ride to get there. This would not be a good trip for those who are handicapped (not much room), but totally enjoyable for all ages. Do bring hats & waters if you're planning to travel during the hot months!
