“Just happened upon this ...”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

After my visit to Anastacia S.P., I wanted to explore a little further so headed to Matanzas. The 1 hour guided trip by boat to the little island fort was a fun diversion from the museums I did the previous day. It is a bit out of the way, but worth a visit if you have 3 or more days.

“Nice boat ride”
Reviewed October 17, 2013 via mobile

We were lucky we didn't have to wait for the boat ride. Call first to get the times so you can plan your trip over. Glad the government was operating so we could stop here!

“Fort Matanzas, Thing around Daytona Beach and St. Augustine”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

Fort Matanzas is a stone structure situated in the middle of nowhere between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach, Florida. It is a small but nice fort to spent few hours outside these towns. You have to access this place form scenic route A1A and make sure you carry enough fluids when you visit this place. Once you board the boat to the fort; you can't buy anything until you are back at the starting station

“Nice get away”

Nice boat ride to the island for an excursion. Park rangers are very informative telling stories of life at the time of the fort.

“Way cool!”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

About 18 miles south of St. Augustine on A1A. Free admission. This fort guarded the southern route into the city at the Matanzas inlet. You ride across the river in a very small ferry. The fort itself is not very big, but gives you an idea of the remoteness of wild Spanish Florida in the 1700's for the 17 men who were stationed there for a month at a time. The quarters are furnished, so you can see how they lived, what they ate, and what they did. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. A must see!
