This is always a wonderful visit-very knowledgeable staff here willing to share with you.
If you time it right, you can go to upper deck and watch and hear the firing of the cannons.
This is not a handicap friendly place due to the natural stairs but there is plenty to see on the ground level such as the barracks, money room, medical supply area.
If you are handicapped, you can get a pass that entitled four people to go with you to National Parks. Be sure to ask at the ticket area. I have used mine many times.

This little fort is a must visit. It's on a beautiful island, you take a boat and then get told history. The Island is on the intercoastal and has great sunsets.

Fort Matanzas National Monument has guarded the back door to St. Augustine since 1742. It sits 14 miles south of Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine. Matanzas is Spanish for slaughters, which is what happened here in 1565 as the Spanish guarded their treasure route from the French at Ft. Caroline. The fort is reached from the Visitor Center on Hwy. A1A at Anastasia Island. There's a short film available and a free passenger ferry that takes you across the Matanzas River to the fort.

Fort Mantanzas (Spanish for 'massacre') is about 20 minutes south of downtown St. Augustine but it well worth the drive. First, it is a National Park Service site, so it is well maintained and staffed by a professional and enthusiastic ranger (despite one of the previous reviews, the workers are definitely INTO the history). Second, it is FREE! A nice boat side across the Mantanzas inlet, admission into the fort (really an old Spanish watch tower), an easy hour with friends and/or family, and a spectacular view at the fort top for no cost? You won't find many bargains like this in St. Augustine! Finally, if you plan well you can visit during living history demonstrations, when volunteers dress as 18th century Spanish soldiers and tell you about the site in full character!!!!

Again, can't say enough about this wonderful site, as it has something for everyone.
