Very historical place to visit. Another great Florida attraction. Loved the free ferry ride. Not much to do on on vacation that was donation only. Only place that I was bitten by a mosquito though so wear bug repellent.

We really enjoyed the boat ride from the visitors' center to the fort and the ranger's historical presentation of life at the fort.in the eighteenth century.

And a free shuttle boat out to the island. It's a bit off the beaten path if you are in St. Augustine and I didn't know where it was for years, although we heard about it. When we finally went, we were pleasantly surprised at how informative the tour was on the island and we wish we could have spent more time exploring but the last boat was about to leave and we weren't inclined to be left behind.

This national historic place is another example of our amazing national park system at work. To get to the actual fort, you must take a short ferry ride. It is free, but you must get tickets at the visitor center for everyone in your party- even babies (we took our 21 month old.). Make sure to plan your arrival close to a ferry launch as they go just once an hour, on the half hour( verify this with the park as times may change and ferry is subject to weather). Also know there are no restrooms at the fort and you may be there nearly an hour, so plan accordingly. There is a long flight of stairs to the main level of the fort where the staff gives you info, and another flight if you are interested in seeing the next level. From there, you can climb a ladder through a somewhat small hole to get a view from the top. You can also walk around the fort on the ground. Back on land, there are just a few items for sale, heated restrooms (it was FREEZING the day we were there, a wooden walkway through a short nature trail, and several picnic tables under some trees that looked just too fantastic for climbing, so we got some great pics. Overall, it was a lovely two hours spent outdoors enjoying Florida's history and nature- all for free.
