Coupled to the Castillo in St Augustine. Worth the short drive of 15 min or so. Nice nature trail too.

I love the fact that I learned alot of early Florida history from visitig this fort. Did a self guided tour at my own pace, go to the highest point and view the harbour from the walls.

Another great family attraction. Mostly easily accessable except getting to the upper area of the fort. If you cannot climb stairs, there is plenty of history to experience at the ground level. I love to be standing on the same ground where important history has taken place!

We recently revisited Fort Matanzas on Martin Luther king Day. On the way we stopped got some picnic supplies. The area has several wood tables. As we arrived several children were climbing trees near the tables. After eating we enjoyed the nature trail. An elevated walk way, keeps you off the ground and out of the sand. Our Carin terrier, enjoyed the fact leashed dogs were welcome. If there are many tourist you might have to wait, because the number of people in the fort is limited. So bring a book, or write a post card while waiting your turn. after leaving you can access the beach directly across from the exit.
