“A visit to a foreign country in the USA”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

You can visit an actual ancient Spanish Fort on the water for free. The unique massive stone structure is complete with a moat, walls and cannons. It is made of Coquina, a natural cement made from loads of tiny shellfish dredged from the river and dried. This material has the unique property of absorbing cannonballs without breaking.

The structure is impressive enough to encourage an interest in history in even the dullest of us.

“Favorite Part of the St. Augustine Road Trip”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

Loved it!! It's on a nice piece of beach stretch. Not very busy on the roads. It's absolutely free which is the best part!! There is a nice little ferry that goes over. Make sure you stop in the little room to get your boarding pass (free) so you get on the first trip over to the Island. The fort itself is really cool and the firing of the canon was my favorite!! Would stop here again!

“authentic, historic Florida culture”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

The castle on the mainland has lots of interesting aspects. But also it's unusual and will take a bit of time if you can manage to also visit a state park facility at the beach area/for the very very earliest Spanish origins and history.

“Take a free boat ride to history!”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

Fort Matanzas is one of my favorite places to visit. Make sure to get there before the last boat leaves at 4pm! Historical tour of the fort, not too interesting for young children! A quick boat ride, safe for older people. You do have to climb to get into the fort!
