It's a fort but more than a fort. If you take the time to take in the whole experience. I'm a pacifist, yet the history still intrigues me.

My husband and I love American history and the fort was just the place to find it. There many portraits with biographical information was very well done.

This is a must see! It was fascinating to see what took place in this fort. To see the gentlemen and dressed in character as soliders. To see them march to fire off the cannon. The view is breathtaking over the Matanzas. Wonderful site.

The oldest stone fort still standing in North America. Never conquered in battle. Pretty amazing. And with the knowledgable Park Rangers on hand you can get a good sense of how it really was.
One tip: Much of your experience here is out of doors (in the Florida sun). Visit in the morning. There is parking onsite for a small fee. Green and Orange trolleys (Old Town Trolley) arrive at the fort entrance about every fifteen minutes; they circle the town constantly, which is a real help.

Be sure to see the movie about the fort to find out the reason for its unusual shape and see how the soldiers drilled to learn the complex process of loading and shooting the cannon.
