Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: A visit to the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum is more than you might expect! Climb 219 steps for a breathtaking view of both St. Aug and the beaches. Or go below to discover object from a British shipwreck. Take free with admission guided tours at 11 am, 12 noon, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm. Or come early at 9 am to beat the heat. Late in the day is also cooler and we are open all summer until 7 pm. Families can enjoy a self guided tour that includes a shipyard playground and a short nature trail. A small-craft boat building exhibition is on site, and you can see archaeologists at work on objects from under the sea. In the keepers' house see "At Home with the Harns in Post Civil War Household," which tells the story of Major William Harn who was at both Ft Sumter and Gettysburg as an artillery commander. He and his family lived as lighthouse keepers for 20 years after the war. Also climb aboard the sandbar in WRECKED! an exhibition about a 1782 British shipwreck following the American Revolution. Our Archaeologists have discovered this story just for you. Visitors can also encounter ghosts and spirits on the nighttime, Dark of the Moon tour, which is the only St. Augustine ghost tour that gets you inside the Lighthouse tower. Book this tour in advance because it fills up fast. And book mid-week to avoid the crowds. For general admission purchase your tickets on-line in advance w/coupon code LH15 to get a 15% discount off regular admission prices. Or join on the porch with a family membership for discounts to local attractions, and 20% off in the Museum shop as well as free admission all year long. “Great stop!”

As we've been traveling during our retirement, we seem drawn again and again to lighthouse tours. I am so impressed with the love this site has received. We experienced our best lighthouse tour in Michigan and it will probably always be our quality yardstick. The Michigan tour topped this tour because it was guided and the landscape was much more breathtaking. This site, however, is well worth visiting. The much vaunted 219 steps were not overwhelming and there were benches on all of the landings. The balcony at the top offered views of St. Augustine and the Matanzas River. The keeper's home has been impressively restored and offers great history lessons.

“Beautiful lighthouse & sweet museum”

The museum is great, lots of amazing artifacts and history. The lighthouse is amazing, quite a climb with narrow stairs, but totally worth it and places to rest on the way.

“Step Up! Enjoy yourself at the St. Augustine Lighthouse!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

Our family had a great time visiting the lighthouse. Not only does it come with a lot of history, its just fun. There are trails there for the kids, the museum has a lot of interesting things, and the staff is super. They are also one of a few that offer military discounts. So, make sure to take advantage of that discount if you can.

“Interesting...”

I love lighthouses and wanted to see this one up close and personal. I didn't feel like I could make it up to the top of the lighthouse, and I may have enjoyed it more had I been able to do that. The self-guided tour was interesting, but I felt the price was a little high. The lighthouse can be viewed from many places in St. Augustine, so, unless you plan to climb, you might want to just see it from a distance.

“Great view!”

We walked to the Lighthouse from our B&B near St. George Street. It's about a two mile walk and well worth it. It's a beautiful historic landmark and has a beautiful view from the top.
