“Average Hotel in a Superb Location...Would Book Again”
Reviewed April 18, 2011

We tentatively booked in this hotel because of all of the negative reviews....so we were both pleasantly surprised when we checked in. Yes, the hotel is dated, but our room was large and clean. The A/C unit was quiet! Our bed was clean & comfortable, so we paid little heed to the older bedspread. The hotel is on the waterfront of Charlotte Harbor and is directly adjacent to a beautiful park. The hotel is also next to the Historic District of Punta Gorda, so walking around was safe and enjoyable. Fisherman's Village (Food, shopping, entertainment) was within walking distance & worth the visit. We only had drinks and hors d'oeuvres at the waterside restaurant, and they were fine. The breakfast area was tiny, but there was also a lot of seating outside if anyone wanted to enjoy the warm morning. The variety of breakfast items was certainly adequate and plentiful...though not "gourmet"! We never walked away hungry! Front desk service was hohum (we really didn't need them beyond check in), but restaurant service was very good. The sunset view from our room was priceless. This was a good hotel for the price...no, it was not a new Sheraton or Hilton...but the location was perfect and the cost reasonable..we'll definitely go back to this hotel.

We stayed at this hotel in conjunction with a reunion. We booked here in order to be with our friends. Having read the reviews on Tripadvisor, we booked with great concern. The hotel lived up to the negative comments written on Tripadvisor.
Bedspread is dated, cleanliness questionable. Pillows hard & lumpy. Bed is hard & no foam egg crate pad is available for those whose arthritis needs a softer bed. Chest of drawers: drawers stick together when they have clothes in them-open one, they all open. Carpet is dirty-the white soles of my house slippers were dirty after one day of walking on the carpet. Patio chairs broken or in poor condition or just missing. Tub liner (rebath?) was bubbled up on the entire bottom surface-stepping into it was like walking on jello-very dangerous- I almost fell the first time I stepped into the tub. No storage area under the bathroom sink-the cabinet had been boarded up. In our 3 day stay, we never had decaf coffee for the room. It was always "due in tomorrow". Two people in King room were provided 2 bath towels, 1 hand towel & 1 wash cloth each day. Even Motel 6 gives 2 of each. Toilet paper was not replaced when nearly empty-I had to go get it from the maid. Maid service was obviously working under orders to scrimp, not just deficient in their work. Wifi was "spotty", sometimes one could get online but often it was unavailable. Breakfast choice was adequate but amount of items ran out quickly. Too many people for the size of the breakfast area and not enough food to feed all of them. Thankfully, I did not experience this problem, but a man was in front of me at the reception (complaint) desk who stated that he had sewage backing up in his sink. A friend staying in a room on top floor had her toilet stop up. There are a couple of good things about this hotel: the fridge/microwave & the location near the water-if you pay extra for the water view rather than the parking lot/highway view.
It is obvious that the owners and/or management are putting as little money as possible into the hotel while grabbing the largest amount of money they can. There is no pride of ownership at this hotel. At 5:05 PM on Monday or Tuesday of our stay I asked to see the manager and was told he/she was not there. I finally decided to just tough it out and be glad to leave on Wednesday morning. But I did write down these complaints so I could recall them when I wrote this review. I am surprised that Best Western has this hotel under its logo. It needs a complete redo-or maybe a bulldozer.

Stayed here one night because we had a gift card to use up. Then we moved to the Sheraton 4 Points across the street for 2 nights because of the bad reviews we read about the Best Western. As such, we are in a unique position to compare the two hotels.

Best Western: Upon arrival we were greeted with a very unpleasant sounding, "checking in?" from a girl at the counter. There wasn't even a hint of a smile or any sign she cared about her job or us whatsoever. So, we proceeded to check in only to be told that the gift card we had received a couple weeks earlier had expired in May of 2008. We explained that it was just purchased and shouldn't be expired. She said to mention it when we checked out the next day or to call customer service ourselves when we got to the room. We got to our room (which wasn't very nice at all), and I headed to the ice machine down the hall. When I got back to the room my wife told me that other guests had just been there as they were given the same room and issued keys to our door (this was about 8-10 minutes after we checked in). I called customer service and explained what we were told about the gift card. The Best Western CS rep (who was quite nice) said that the gift card didn't even have an expiry date and that it would work fine (which it did when we used it at checkout). I also mentioned my concern about the hotel issuing keys to our room to strangers.

Other con: the space for the continental breakfast is tiny. There was a very large number of people there with absolutely no room to move and nowhere available to sit. The staff was pushing their way around to restock the food and coming up behind people and barking "excuuuuse me" to get by. (there was no way these people would have known the staff member was behind them). This madness persisted for at least a couple hours ( we went for a walk and when we got back it was still the same)

Pros: pool area seemed nice but we didn't use, adjacent to a small park system that followed the water to the Fishermans Village (which was great)

All in all the service was not good at all and the room wasn't much better.

The 4 Points Sheraton.... We were greeted with a big smile and a very friendly greeting. Asked if we found a parking spot alright. Explained directions to our room (Best Western didn't and we ended up missing a turn down a hall and had to backtrack with all of our luggage), the room was extremely nice, fresh, well decorated and perfectly clean with a nice view of the water. The breakfast was amazing and the staff there top notch. The pool area and hot tub were nice, the lobby was large, spacious, and very well decorated. They even have bicycles to borrow (although we preferred to walk around) Finally, there was a nice paved walking path that allowed you to stroll to the Fisherman's Village (about 15-20 minutes)

We would definitely recommend the 4 Points Sheraton to anyone staying in the area. You just will not be disappointed. It is FAR superior to the Best Western (and, for us at least, almost the exact same price)

I would have to agree with the vast majority of the other reviewers. We were there for 4 nights because of a baseball tournament my son was in. The location is nice, however our room had a view of the parking lot. The noise in the mornings of delivery trucks, etc. was disruptive. The shower was unacceptable. You couldn't get the temperature consistant. It would all of a sudden be hot or cold. And then the screeching of the plumbing was unbearable. They were lacking in towels and the ones that were there were extremely worn. The breakfast area was insufficient in size and things were not very well stocked. There was hardly any room to move around while getting your food. The restaurant on site was not very good although the prices were resonable. The service was slow. I would not recommend this hotel or stay here again.

Hotel is totally run down. Our room had a dripping tub faucet, three large ceiling patches, linen was old and worn looking, balcony had only one chair and in need of a good sweeping, TV was old with fuzzy reception, hotel grounds were littered with trash and the hotel lawn was full of weeds with no green grass. Don't waste your money! Waterfront location is the only thing going for this place and was the reason we selected it. We were very disappointed.

This is not in my opinion a hotel. It is a stopover, one night type, motel and no more!
The only good points are the location (a short walk to a decent restaurant), the pool, and helpful front desk staff. Everthing else is non existant or sub-standard and In need of total refurbishment.
There is no restaurant. The breakfast facility in the front lobby is a joke, and Beneddeto's Martini and Steak Bar attatched to the complex should be avoided, if you enjoy good food!

We are aren't sure why the bad reviews. We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights. We had a wonderful stay. Our room was poolside and we really enjoyed sitting out on our patio. The room was very clean. We loved being so close to the restaurant/lounge area. The food was very good and an inviting atmostphere. One morning we did eat at the continental breakfast and it states that it is open until 10:00 but they were tearing it down at 9:30. We liked being right by the water and the park. Honestly we have stayed in many hotels and not sure why the bad rap because we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. If we had not planned on going to visit friends across the state we would have liked to have stayed there a few more nights. So I would recommend the Best Western in Punta Gorda.
