We stayed for three nights at this hotel on top floor. Nice decor and comfortable rooms with great view. The restaurant downstairs serves great food! Martinis are a reasonable $6 The staff couldn't be any friendlier and helpful. The price was right. Parking could be an issue if band is playing on top bar area...Also people were using private parking for mexican restaurant on next block. Beware if you are on top floor and there is a band on the roof...You can hear it!

The Wyvern is a gem in a lesser travelled area of Florida's West Coast. A beautiful rooftop pool and bar area was a welcome respite for a short getaway. Our only complaint would be that the pool area is tiny and so chairs and lounges around the pool are at a premium. If you don't get poolside by 930am, you'll be S.O.L. We really can't make any other negative comments. The hotel is in downtown Punta Gorda, in a section trying to revitalize itself after a devastating hurricane season a few years back. The rooms are clean, the staff is friendly, the restaurant food is delicious and we'd come back in a heart beat.

We had the great pleasure of staying at the Wyvern Hotel in Punta Gorda this weekend, the nights of April 15 and 16, 2011, the weekend of Punta Gorda’s annual block party. Bottom line before the details: Near Perfect!

Following are main factors in our selection of the Wyvern: 1) Location—The Wyvern is right downtown in a walkable city. There are lots of things to do, restaurants and shopping in good proximity. You could easily enjoy a few days visit without driving your car. 2) Reviews on this site and others—We always check travelers’ reviews. 3) Advertised amenities—we are active people in our 60s and 70s. We require comfort, a relatively high degree of luxury, a nice atmosphere, and security. That said, this is not a hotel that caters exclusively to those of the old fuddy-duddy persuasion. The patronage is obviously of an eclectic nature, of diverse ages and family situations. There were we senior citizens mixing in with 20-somethings, singles traveling together, and people with small children.

The staff people are all friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and this is everybody from desk to housekeepers to security to bartenders to wait staff!

The rooms are spacious and lovely bed/sitting areas and gorgeous bathrooms. The bathrooms are very large for hotels, with whirlpool tub on one side and a glass-walled shower on the other. The bathrooms are finished with beautiful marble floors, wide sparkling vanities, and convenient lighting. The Wyvern provides lots and lots of bath linens and a variety of toiletries including shower gels, shampoos, conditioners, two kinds of bar soap and body lotion. All toiletries are way above average for a hotel.

The rooms are nicely appointed and comfortably furnished with attention to the small niceties. (The entrance hall even has a table and mirror directly next to the closet.) Iron and ironing board are stashed in the closet. A fully stocked mini-bar is in entrance hall and has an electric outlet. It looks like built in furniture, and fits well with the décor.

The bed is of good quality and comfortable. Even in the nicest hotels, I bring my own pillow. In this case, it was not at all necessary, as lots of pillows of various densities ranging from soft to firm are provided.

Sitting area includes a loveseat, a chair, a coffee/cocktail table, a desk, television—what you would expect for an upscale hotel.

The rooms are well soundproofed. By request, we were on the second floor, close to exits. Our room was at the end of the hall. The block party event is about as noisy as you can imagine. We were fairly cocooned once we got into the room, and truly didn’t hear a thing.

The hotel restaurant is small, quiet and very pleasant. The menu is not huge, but has a sufficient variety of well-prepared and presented entrees, sides, small meals, and desserts. No toast at breakfast, but lots of bread options including baguettes, croissants, bagels and English muffins plus waffles. Florida seafood lovers, rejoice! If grouper is on the menu, rest assured that it is real grouper. The chef can make that promise, because the restaurant accepts only the whole fish, then dresses it out on site. Made me happy.

The bar adjacent to the restaurant is just a lovely place to be. There are plenty of sofas and comfy chairs in which you can relax, and stay as long as you like. It is a quiet place, so you can enjoy your conversation. Bartenders are far beyond competent. While young, they actually know how to make a good, non frou-frou martini. Take it easy; they make the frou-frou stuff as well.

If you are in the mood for a more tropical and slightly noisier environment, go on up to the rooftop bar, enjoy the live music, the pool, and watch the sunset over Charlotte Harbor Bay.

If you are in the mood to stroll out to a restaurant, the desk person is happy to suggest some good places. There is something for everybody, again, within walking distance. Here are two that we really like.
•The Celtic Ray Public House is a real Irish pub owned and operated by a real Irishman from Dublin who cooks great “pub grub” using his mother’s recipes. We go there every time we visit Punta Gorda.
•Table 209 presents a menu with international flair, some innovative, nothing eccentric, and all delicious! My snapper was nothing short of fabulous. The wine list is not huge, but the variety is impressive, and you can get some awesome stuff by the glass or bottle, and moderately priced.

I said “near perfect”, and that is true. Here are a few minor imperfections, if you will, and none are a big deal. 1) There is no bottle opener in the mini-bar. I travel with a particular kind of quinine water. I assumed there would be a bottle opener, because the mini-bar stocks bottled beer. When we checked out, the desk person said that they keep bottle openers at the desk. Yes, I should have asked. 2) Room service isn’t available until 8 a.m. when the restaurant opens. If you are an early riser and want coffee, go to the lobby. They have coffee there. There is no coffee maker in the room. 3) The whirlpool bath stopper was inoperable except just by reaching down and pulling it up or pushing it down. I reported this at checkout, and the desk person made a note. 4) The whirlpool was on a very gentle setting. There was something resembling a knob on the tub, but it would not turn. Fortunately, the gentle current was OK with me.

A suggestion for other travelers: When checking in, it is actually easy to turn off Retta Espanade, go around back to the parking lot, enter through that door, thence up a short hallway to the lobby. Remember, this is a hotel in the middle of a small city. Just a suggestion.

Again, we enjoyed our experience with the Punta Gorda Wyvern, and will stay again at this beautiful hotel.

Room Tip: Make preferences clear when booking.

I was so much looking forward to the Wyvern. Pool on roof top, rated best hotel etc... what a disappointment! Despite the nice room and I must admit GREAT bathroom, we could not sleep until very late in the nite because of the deafening music next door. I had problem with the reservation which apparently they could not find. This prevented us from going out for 2 hours. Then the reception sent the Spanish speaking only room cleaner to us. All he said was `passports` then walked right into our room! I called 0 but noone picked up the phone at the reception. I decided to go down to the front desk . It turned out some previous guests had forgotten their passport possiblty in our room! That is what the man was trying to tell us! Well, you would expect from a 4 star hotel that they call you or send an English speaking person to talk to you. I felt very unsafe to have someone walk right into my room asking for passports! This is not acceptable. I will not come back. Especially for a view of the parking lot...only great if you want to keep an eye on your car LOL! BTW across the street is Sheraton Four points, where we stayed the 2nd night. Less luxury but everything was perfect. Next time, no hesitation. More for your dollar. And a better night sleep!

This was a very pleasant surprise. From the front desk to the rooftop bar, very classy. My only issue; no coffee in the room and the restaurant doesn't open until 8am. So you gotta get ready caffeine deficient. But forgetting that, this place is well cared for. The staff is very, very sharp. Rooms are clean as a whistle and bed is fab-u-lous!
