This place is definitely not a zoo so don’t expect pristine pathways or fancy gift shops. It is a rescue facility that lovingly and humanely cares for mistreated or abandoned wildlife. It is sad that some people’s misguided ideas of what constitutes an acceptable family pet, or other owners abandoning them (some are previous circus animals) have led to the need for sanctuaries such as Octagon, but thank goodness places like this do exist. It is entirely funded by donations and run by volunteers and the costs to care for these animals is enormous. It is quite an education and privilege to see these magnificent animals up close and personal. Very limited facilities and amenities – just a chance to experience and appreciate a variety of amazing animals.
