“Wonderful property”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2008

My husband and I went to Turtle Beach Inn for a lovely weekend away. What we found was a great combination of beach house and B&B. The Inn is very small, only 4 rooms or so, all with outside entrances from wraparound porches (which keeps things quiet and private). Everything is comfortably decorated and Trish, Chris and Stephanie are gracious and knowledgeable hosts. Breakfast was tasty (variety of cereals, toast, fruit, juice, and a hot dish like french toast or egg casserole) and was self serve from 8:30-10 (as opposed to everyone must be at the table at 8:30, even at a B&B sometimes you want to sleep in!) The Inn has all you want in a beach house: beach towels, chairs, boogie boards, hot tub, plenty of nooks for reading or just relaxing, hammock, flashlights, tons of books, dvds, menu books, you name it. And, it is right on the beach so you fall asleep to the waves. Heaven.

My wife and I had not traveled to the north Florida coast prior to this trip. We had consulted some friends from the Tallahassee area who recommended this part of Florida due to its pristine beaches. We found Turtle Beach Inn on the internet and were a little leary that it was 10-15 miles from any town. What we found was shear bliss. This B/B is directly on the beach. There are 4 rooms in the main house which all have access to the main common area, the hot tub and the unbelievable deck. There is also a rental house and a building with two condos behind the main house which are part of the facility. Trish is the owner/jack-of-all-trades hostess. She has immaculately decorated all of the rooms in a country theme and maintains the beautiful landscaping, since that is apparently what she did in a prior life. She makes you feel at home constantly and while being around all of the time, is deft at making you feel tended to while also making the place seem as your own. A full breakfast is served (which Trish cooks) to the folks staying in main house every morning. The two mornings we ate, we had spinach florentine/eggs and a tomato/potato/egg caserole in addition to fresh baked banana or zucchuni breads, fruit, and coffee/juice. Each evening wine/snacks are set out at 6pm to finish off the day as it should be. We spent the three days we were there primarily walking up and down the wide, white sand beach not realizing how far we had wandered, prior to setting up camp right in front of the inn with umbrellas/chairs/towels provided by the inn. We often were the only people on the beach as far as we could see. We bought sandwich supplies for lunch at the grocery store in Apalachicola (which is itself very cool) due to the 10-15 minute drive to places to eat. We went out to eat both nights in Apalachicola, where the food was excellent. Boss Oysters is right on the water and the ahi, shrimp and oysters tasted like they had run out and caught it after we ordered. Our meal at the Owl Cafe the next night was very tasty with good service, though we wish we had requested to sit outside--the inside ambience is somewhat sterile. We retired to the inn around 10 each night with a bottle of wine from the Piggly Wiggly in Apalachicola, where we sat on the beach or deck and sat in awe at the stars that were visible due to the absence of light from anywhere. They have a local rule asking that outside lights be turned off to avoid confusing the turtles that come to nest and lay eggs in May/June/July. Trish and her family had a bon-fire on the beach one of our nights to which we were invited. Not to rave on and on, but the wildlife was stunning. A family of 10-12 dolphins swam by each morning and evening, with an occasional one coming within 20 yards of the beach. We were told that if we went kayaking with the boats which are available at the inn, that the dolphins would swim up to you. We also saw several bald eagles in the area, as well as osprey (sea-eagles) taking their bounties from the bays/inlets. If you go, make sure you go out to Cape San Blas. Ask Trish exactly where to go. I have strongly encouraged all of my friends to go to this place of R/R. Oh, yeah, they discourage families with children from staying in the main inn/house which was a welcome relief, as there were not at all in our inn or on the beach during our stay. Their website is turtlebeachinn.
