It's hard to go wrong with good food on a deck overlooking the Inter-coastal! We had soup and various salads, and the portions were way too much for us ladies. I took my soup home & enjoyed the bisque another day!

Seared tuna topped on the BJ's salad, great corn bread and pumpkin bread brought out ahead of time. Nice place to sit outside on the intercostal, blue moon on draft, friendly service. My wife says the crab cakes are the best she has ever had.

Barbara Jean's on the Intercoastal Waterway in Ponte Vedra has been a favorite for a while. After several fabulous lunches and dinners, we were excited to try their breakfast - offered on Saturday and Sunday.

What a disappointment! One breakfast (with over easy eggs and cheese grits) was pretty good, although the grits were exceedingly bland. The other breakfast (with scrambled eggs and a pork steak) was... better than awful, but not much better.

The scrambled eggs were off-colored, not the normal, appetizing yellow. Also, they didn't seem to have been scrambled in any usual way, very choppy. The pork had pretty grill marks, but was dry, tough, and relatively tasteless.

The worst feature of both meals was the home fries. These potatoes were unlike any breakfast potato one would expect. The potatoes were large, dark, soggy chunks, without a hint of crispiness. They weren't good at all, and just didn't seem to belong on a breakfast plate.

The best breakfast feature was the biscuit. It was soft and spongy, and came in a cupcake-type paper.

Advice from these diners: Skip 2-star breakfast at Barbara Jean's, and come for a 5-star lunch or dinner.

Tis place is very low key and unassuming. It's nothing fancy, but the food is really good. It's right on the intercoastal waterway so you can see some boats go by from time to time.

The wait staff all seemed young; teens or young adults with smiles and enthusiasm.

The menu has kind of a "down home" feel with daily specials and fresh veggies. There is quite a selection. But my favorite has got to be the crab cakes. The smallest size comes with two sides and is $15.99, which might seem a little pricey for lunch, but it's all crab, not a bunch of filler. Yum!!

Barbara Jean's in Ponte Vedra became a new favorite after a recent celebration with friends... and I've been back with others twice in the past month.

The setting is utterly spectacular. In good weather, riverside tables provide a magnificent view of the Intercoastal Waterway, passing boats, natural greenery, and soaring birds.

The menu has a lot to offer. Main courses (shrimp, cod, crab cake) all have been excellent. The sides are varied. Green beans are exceptionally flavorful. The only disappointment was the cheese grits, which were very bland. Also, take note that hush puppies, typical in southern seafood restaurants, aren't on the menu. Instead, you get a basket of assorted breads. You probably won't miss the hush puppies.

If you want to linger after the meal, tossing bits of bread into the water brings up schools of mullet. Prices may be a couple of dollars more than at a typical restaurant in a mall, but the view's well worth it.
