“Great Local's spot”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Calypso Restaurant is truly a local gem. It is located in a plain strip mall but do not let that deter you from stopping by. They are not open on the weekends so stop by for lunch or dinner during the week.

The menu has West Indian tones but what is truly their sweet spot is local fish cooked in several different ways. They often have hard to find fish like cobia, wahoo and hogfish. My favorite is to order it blackened with a side of their house made potato salad.

Second fave is the Calypso Cutter. A speciality sandwich made with creamy shrimp and mushroom mixture. Quite decadent and filling.

If you are in Pompano do yourself a favor and stop by for a fish sandwich and a cold beer.

“Good Seafood”

Relaxed, very casual, great spot for fresh seafood. Hidden gem in Pompano but not open weekends - just private parties.

“Ate there 3 times in 5 days!”
Reviewed April 13, 2013 via mobile

I'm a firm believer in "if it ain't broke don't fix it!" we've been to calypso 3 times in the week we've been on vacation here! My dad lives in the neighborhood and showed us this little gem. All 3 of us have been in the restaurant biz for years and this has been one of our favorites. The staff all are really friendly and competent, they all seem to enjoy working there which goes a long way. The place is closed on weekends which I think speaks volumes to the owner. If you are doing alright the rest of the week, why work weekends? It means he's not greedy, which to me means he won't cut corners where it counts... The food! And the food is great! Nothing that's going to win any culinary awards, but it's fresh! Fresh fish in south Florida isn't as common as you would think. They have fresh fish and consistently tasty, home style Caribbean food. The steamed clams were so sweet and tender! The scallop and shrimp burger is a must try as well as the Calypso Cutter! We are leaving on Monday or else we'd probably be going back again before we left! Defintely hit it up if you are in the neighborhood :)

“Fresh and delicious!”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

Been coming here for years. Start with the Jerk wings (they are really spicy so be careful) and grilled conch. Their signature dish is called the Calypso Cutter sandwich which is a hollowed out kaiser roll filled with sauteed shrimp, garlic, parsley, mushrooms and cheddar cheese that is then broiled to melt the cheese. Need a fork to eat this one. The shrimp and scallop burger is light and filled with the main ingredients. But what I really long for is the Flash fried whole yellowtail snapper with a teriyaki mango cilantro sauce (I get it on the side so I can dip otherwise it soaks the crunchy fish skin). It is cooked to perfection.

My kids get the chicken fingers or dolphin fingers. The entire staff is fast, clean, and friendly. Don't be decided by the location - the majority of great places in south Florida are in strip malls.

Also, they are only open Monday through Friday so don't wait until the weekend or you will miss out. Go early around 11:30 to beat the lunch rush and around 6p to beat the dinner rush.

“Local Gem”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

We were vacationing in nearby Fort Lauderdale and used trip advisor to screen for "local" sea food restaurants-Calypso was rated highly. We were not disappointed.

Don't be put off by the strip mall location. Food was great, our waitress entertaining and very helpful. We shared fresh oysters and grilled "conch" apps with fresh grilled grouper-caribbean glazes/marinades optional, mild to hot. Will not hesitate to go back again and definitely recommend.
