“A great experience all round!”
Reviewed April 2, 2013 via mobile

Over from UK we looked forward to visiting this restaurant again. We caught the water taxi about 2pm ( no queue) for a late lunch with our 11 year old son. The trip across to Rum Bay was made special by letting our son 'Skipper' the boat for a while. A very chuffed little chap. The restaurant was not busy at this time of day, staff attentive, food spot on and Margaritas to die for. Afterwards a walk along the deserted beach, finding some magnificent shells. Back for an ice cream, delicious, and the lovely lady gave my son a bag for his shells. The trip back was equally as special because the boat was followed by a cheeky dolphin. A great experience all round.

“It's all about the experience”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

This is not a spot to stop into when you're hungry because it takes some planning and some time to actually get there. First of all, you need to park your car at Johnny Leverock's restaurant, so if you're hungry, choose plan B. But back to plan A, then you need to wait for the ferry over to Rum Bay. The little ferrys--and there are two of them--hold 16 adults and 4 children, maximum. So if there's a line at the ferry, you can do the math--how long until YOU will get on a boat. It's a nice "sea cruise" of about 15 minutes, and the ferry drops you at the dock that serves Rum Bay.
The restaurant is good sized, with tons of employees all dressed in a subdued floral shirt-uniform, and running from here to there.
We have eaten there many times, sometimes coming in our own boat, but on Easter we took the company ferry, even though we had a reservation, we had to wait for the second boat due to the crowd.

Rum Bay was featuring a buffet dinner on Easter, one price and all-you-can-eat. Man there were some fat people there, but the place was hopping and the food was plentiful. I will say the meats (ham and lamb for Easter plus chicken and shrimp for the white meat fans) were either over or under-cooked. The asparagus was hard and stringy, but generally speaking, nobody went home hungry, we made our way through the various offerings, a couple of drinks, and some key-lime pie.

There is an active bar, and guests were dressed from go to work -down Friday wear, to bathing suits with shifts over. So you can probably feel comfortable no matter what you have on. The ride back, in the twilight of the day, was a nice cap off to a day with friends. So my rating of Very Good, id for the experience. The food was average at best. Nonetheless, the experience is VERY GOOD.

“Nice day trip”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

While visiting family it was recomended we go to Rum Bay for lunch. The children enjoyed the boat ride. Boat operator was a easterner and made for an enjoyable ride! We arrived 20 mins early before the first departure of the day and just made it on the boat. But they were running 2 boats and the next one was leaving shortly thereafter. The restaurant itself was clean, our server was great, he was very attentive and able answer our quetions about the menu. MEals were served in a expectable amount of time. Server checked in once or twice to ensure meal was good and for drink refills. PRice of food was about $12-15 per entree.

“Great excursion on a nice day”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

This was our second visit to Palm Island's Rum Bay restaurant, and it was just as pleasant as the first. Address: 7092 Placida Rd, Placida FL; Tel 914-697-0566 (this is to reserve the water taxi; runs about every 30 minutes; $5 return; 10-minute ride; see the osprey nest and perhaps an eagle having lunch on a sandbar). Leverocks on the mainland is their sister restaurant, right on the road (Leverock's Seafood House, 7092 Placida Rd, Englewood, FL 34224); park in their lot and follow the dock around to the taxi stand). Be near the front of the line, in case non-reservations show up; 16 is the max load. . We like to have lunch first and then walk the long beach; some decent shelling. I had the fish & chips, which were excellent; my wife had a very good vegan salad; and a friend has ribs, which she claimed were excellent. Prices are quite reasonable. We sat in the windowed porch, but there is also outside seating. When you leave, if there is a wait you can take a drink from the bar Actually we had a drink afterwards at Leverocks, around 4, and they seemed to have a happy hour going; at least the Vodka Tonics were pretty cheap.

“Ride to Dinner or Lunch”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

Took the boat for $5 per person to Palm Island on a sunny early afternoon and enjoyed a delightful lunch at Rum Bay Restaurant. The seafood is excellent and prices are reasonable. Be sure to take a jacket even if it feels warm on shore. The ride can be cool.
