“Nice view, but scary stairs”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2014

We chose to visit this landmark on our trip to Pensacola Beach for the airshow. We had difficulty finding it because our Garmin didn't give us good directions. When we got to the entrance to the naval base the woman manning the post took her job WAY too serious and yelled at us for being in the wrong lane (even though the sign was covered up). The trip up and down the stairs is quite scary, especially when you pass someone going the other way. I would never take a small child. Once at the top, it is crowded due to the fact it is narrow and small. The view is great, but it's hard to take it all in when you're nervous about the lack of space. The history and artifacts inside the lighthouse are okay, but for the price of admission we weren't impressed. We also didn't care for being asked for a restoration donation right after paying for admission.

My wife said she wouldn't do this tour again, even if it was free.

“Go to the top”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2014

Very nice historical landmark. Do yourself a favor and do not stop if you get started up the 177 steps. I stopped about 2/3 the way up and regret it. my son made it to the top.

“Great view!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2014

I didn't think much of it before arriving, but once you get inside the lighthouse itself, those 177 steps with no interior railing are a bit scary at times (especially when someone else is coming in the opposite direction). It is also extremely hot inside but that's expected. Once at the top, however, there is a strong breeze and the view is spectacular (the highest focal point in the state of Florida).

The house attached to the lighthouse is a museum with a few rooms dedicated to information about this and other lighthouses in general. I didn't know there was a fee to go in until I got there (nobody's fault but my own), but it's $6 for adults and $4 for children. $10 to climb some steps seems a bit high to me (I know it goes to the costs of operating and maintaining it), so thats the only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars.

A lovely old lighthouse that's being restored. Great views from the top. Located within the Naval Air Station.
