Big Lagoon took a hard hit during Hurricane Ivan but has recovered nicely. Hiking paths and boardwalks, a pavillion and beaches in the Intra coastal waterway are big draws but the area retains the feel of the natural Northwest Florida environment. We love it.

Someone posted above, "“Boring. Ugly scenery.” Not worth the fee to enter. Go instead to Johnson Beach National Park just over the bridge." Not a very honest review of a campground. Sure, it's probably not worth the entry fee, but it's a campground. It costs $20/night to sleep there. You have electricity, running water, sewerage, and a pretty nice bathhouse. Plus, campers get to use the $10 boat ramp for free.

I camp in a tent and this place was perfect for a camper with a boat. They put me in a spot that was deep enough to park my truck and trailer, as well as having a perfect little tree covered tent area. I was also directly across the street from the bathhouse, so that was a plus. I didn't spend any time on the trails or anything else there because I went for the boat ramp. Next time I go, I will be checking out the trails. This place was great!

We just finished our week long camping trip to Florida. We stayed at Big Lagoon State Park. Overall, it was a nice relaxing trip. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for when you go. The park is nice. Expect for a few, most of the campsites aren't very big. We have a 32' travel trailer and there wasn't a lot of extra room for bikes, chairs, or a vehicle. I'd rate the lot size as a 6 out of 10. The bathrooms were acceptable, not the best I've ever seen, but certainly not the worst either. I am very picky about where I shower and I was okay using them rather than our camper shower. I'd rate them a 7 out of 10. There is "beach" at the campground. Again it depends on what you are looking for. The lagoon is sheltered and great for children under 7 I'd say. There is hardly any sandy beach area. Don't bother bringing anything other than a beach chair because it won't fit. My kids liked this beach for fishing. They had a blast catching and releasing hermit crabs and sand crabs. Although salt water, it truly isn't the gulf. We drove about 10 minutes to Johnson Beach for the "real ocean." I'd give the beach area a 6 out of 10, since at least there was something there and it would be great for small children. One thing missing at the campground is laundry facilities. Bear that in mind if you plan on staying for a while. You will have to find a laundromat elsewhere. With six of us, we accumulated laundry quickly and laundry facilities would have been great to have. Now for the area. Again it all depends on what you are looking for. It's a quiet area, with not a lot to offer entertainment wise. Definitely quiet and not a tourist trap like Destin. But for our family, it was almost too quiet. There weren't a lot of restaurants around or things to do. We drove 45 minutes into Pensacola when we wanted to do something. I'd give area attractions a 6 out of 10. While for us, a family of six, this park was okay. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Next time, we'll look for a park with a better beach area, and a little closer to the "action." For someone else, this park could be a 10 out of 10. It all depends on your wants and needs. I hope this helps.

Big Lagoon State Park is a very nice campground with clean restrooms. Each site is surrounded by natural vegetation and you can hear many types of birds. The boardwalk trails are nice to walk or ride your bikes on. There is no real beach, however, the National Gulf seashore in Perdido Key is just a 5 minute drive over the bridge.
