“The Grand Dame of Pensacola”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

First let me state that I frequently visit the Saenger Theatre and it is, in my opinion, the single greatest asset in Pensacola offering an atmosphere which is elegant yet welcoming to all. They have a hardworking group of volunteers called "Friends of the Saenger" whose sole mission and existence is to insure its survival using financial contributions and fund raisers for the enhancement, beautification and functionality of this majestic place. Throughout the year many local and national talents rent the facilities for their productions. The Saenger's Broadway Series (again thanks to the "Friends of the Saenger") is a wonderful offering of quality shows.
The Saenger Theatre, affectionally known to the locals as "The Grand Dame", is a must see if you visit Pensacola.

“Beautiful, but CRAMPED”
Reviewed July 30, 2013 via mobile

Have been there numerous times, both before and after renovation. We were very excited to hear about the renovation, assuming it would include the very, very uncomfortable seating. Sadly, it did not. Anyone over 4 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing more than 95 pounds will get pinched and squeezed and have muscle cramps before the first half hour. It's very much like sitting in airline cheap seats. Pretty soon you forget about the show and start looking at your watch wondering how much longer you have to wait to leave.

Thank you for your kind words about the Saenger Theatre. Prior to the $15 million renovation in 2009, the widest seat in the theatre was 17" and there were very few of them. The majority of them ranged between 14" - 16".

In the renovation, we lost 161 seats. The seats now range from 18" wide to as much as 22" wide. The leg room on the orchestra level was increased anywhere from 1" to as much as 5" additional inches. Unfortunately, in the balcony, the leg room was not able to be addressed with the funding available. The entire balcony would have had to be re-worked.

If we were to lose any more seats, the Saenger would no longer become a viable stop for touring shows and concerts because of the lower number of seats.

“Bad sound system makes for a waste of money”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

After going to several productions at the Saenger I can see where they renovated the guiding and paint and carpet, and expanded the backstage area, but they should have put in a decent sound system while they were at it. Sitting in the balcony is a waste of time and money. The main floor seating is somewhat better, but we were sitting up close. We walked out on two productions and won't be going back again.

“Disappointed”
Reviewed June 20, 2013

I was born in Pensacola and used to go to the Saenger Theatre on Saturdays for the children's matinee. It was a special occasion. I remember the Saenger before it's renovation. On a recent trip back to Pensacola, I really wanted to tour the Saenger but it was closed. It is only open for performances. They really should consider a tour for the public.
