Sugar Sands Inn and Suites
Ranked #38 of 48 Hotels in Panama City Beach
Reviewed August 1, 2012

I'm the head coach of a girls softball team in GA and we just stayed at Sugar Sands in Panama City Beach. We had a total of 16 rooms in our group and Linda and the crew took care of us perfectly. Thanks to Ricky,Amy, Jay, Jason and the rest of the group for making our stay wonderful. They took care of each of our families and the hotel was very nice and affordable. Right on the beach and just in the right place to enjoy everything in a short drive. The whole group went above and beyond making our stay wonderful. They even had to constuct a ramp for us to help one dad in a wheel chair get in his room easier. We will for sure be back again when we play in the World Series again in Panama.

This hotel isn't a four star hotel. But...my family enjoyed it a great deal. They were very nice by letting us check in early when we got into the city way too early. The room was always cleaned when we asked it too be by putting the key fob on the door handle. The area is a lot quieter then down near the pier park area. The pool area and beach area was always clean. The one bad spot that I can mention, and it isn't the hotels fault, people need to learn to read. There was a sign on the outside elevator to please dry off before getting into the elevator. I fully understand this because if you ride and your dripping wet, there are smell issues of mold from left over water. Also the fall hazard. People either can't read or were ignoring it. The view from our balcony was beautiful and the sound of the surf was mesmerizing. We WILL stay there again if we go back to Panama City Beach.

For $150+ per night, this hotel was horrible!!! Stucco was falling off the outside of the building and doors were rusty. The room stunk stunk stunk!!! The carpet was so gross that neither of us wanted to walk on it without wearing socks or shoes, and our socks were black after walking on the carpet. The 19" TV was a joke. The air conditioner was loud and blew so much hot air on the balcony, it was nearly impossible to sit out there and enjoy the view. The safe in the room had a had torn handwritten sign "Safe out of order". The elevator door did not close completely and creaked going up and down. The "kitchenette" was gross--the counter tops were worn white and we refused to use ANY of the dishes or utensils. Bathroom wasn't too bad, and the sheets seemed to be clean. But the bedspread seemed not to be clean and we refused to pull it up. The couch was sagging and felt dirty. The walls were horrendous colors (and it looked like some type of plastic--ugh). Also, this is advertised as PCB hotel and it is actually at the end of Ventura Beach which was far from anything else, so we had to drive through all the traffic to get to any of the things we wanted to do at PCB. The two good areas were the pool/hot tub/patio, and of course, the beach!! The beach was not crowded and was clean There was a huge sandbar not far off shore which was nice as we could go out far and still touch bottom and feel safe. Will NEVER return, and will make sure others know how horrible it is!

Room Tip: Go anywhere else!!!

Just returned and I think NO ONE should stay here! It was downright nasty. Dirty!!! They do claim they have some renovated rooms however our room was so dirty I couldn't believe it! Shredded carpet. Never one time vacuumed while we stayed. Do not walk barefoot in your room as your feet will be black as tar.

Other people we did know stayed beachfront & said they had better rooms. However, they were still dirty. Just not as dirty as ours.

Over charged for ice at lobby, 2.50 for a 8lb bag of ice. WI-FI was sketchy. Actually we were able to connect 1 day out of our 5 there.

PAY MORE GO ELSEWHERE!!!

Room Tip: Rooms across the street are old & dilapidated. Moldy sinks, rusty refrigerator, ripped carpet...

I read all of the reviews & was very nervous about staying here. I am so glad that I ignored all of the bad reviews & focused on the positive ones, because it was a great place to stay. The view from our room was perfect. The staff was very friendly & helpful. The cleaning staff did a wonderful job. Everytime that we drove by the huge resorts, we always commented on how glad we were that we were staying at the Sugar Sands. I am very picky about where I stay when we travel & I was hoping that I had made the right decision to stay here & I was so happy with my decision. If you want to be right in the middle of the crowded part of the beach you will not want to stay here, but if you want to stay in the quiet part of the beach this is the place for you.

Booked the room for 4 nights after reading mixed reviews. Arrived and room was ready. Elevator stunk and was dirty. Room was clean and fresh. Looked like new paint. The carpet was clean as well as the bathroom. Now for the not-so-good. The bathroom fixtures were corroded and nasty with rust. The mattresses on both beds looked like they came from the flea market. My hips still hurt from those things. There were mattress toppers on them but they did not help. The refrigerator sounded like it had a woodpecker living in it. It was noisy and kept us awake. The tv looked like something from the 80's..Parking was terrible. Not enough room on beach side and parked behind a convenience store in the dark. (Did not seem secure) Overall, I cannot complain...it's a beach motel. Housekeeping did a good job with towels and making our room smell clean.

Room Tip: Try for a floor on ground level or 2nd floor. Take the stairs.

Our stay at Sugar Sands was great! It was Me, My husband and our 19 month old toddler with some friends. We got down there on the 4th of July and stay until the 8th. It was a surprise to what the room looked like when we arrived. Very clean, smelt fresh, dishes, pots and pans. bathroom was clean. and the Balcony view was amazing. We had the DQ plan with the Two Queens bed and sofa sleeper with a split room.

The AC went out about the 2 days we were there and the staff immediately fixed it with no problem. Staff was extremely nice and helpful, especially when I got stung by a Jellyfish for the first time. Our family will deff. stay there again on our next trip to PCB. Great Price :] about 5 miles from entertainment but the drive is not long at all.

Very Happy customers.

Room Tip: DQ plan is worth the money!
